Nice of the BiB (and yellow) to turn up and pay their respects
Shame that many of those there can't do slow riding. Where should I go to tell them that they ought to get trained?

I fell on this by accident and although it's hardly 'mega' it peaked my interest.
Back in the day (the 80s) Exercise Roadmaster was the Army Rally Championship event - 2 night navigation exercises with a trials type event on the intervening day. A few years before, the Championship event was shared between UK and Germany on alternate years, the BAOR event being called Exercise Magnum Spirit.
Ex Magnum Spirit was arguably the harder event - there were lots of regulations and niceties to be considered when running a big motor sports event in the UK (both events had a start list of 120 crews) so it tended to be a wee bit lame but for Magnum, it was a simple issue of submitting Army Form 443 for the area you wanted to use and when granted, you could go anywhere in it. One of the joys of being an 'occupying army'.
Roadmaster seems to have been toned down quite a lot, no mention of night navigation exercises, just a trials type event at Leconfield it seems and including motorcycles. There used to be a lot of MC trials and later enduros in the army but as I gave up on them in the early 80s I didn't keep up to date with competitions but it's good to see bikes included in this exercise. I used to do trials on BSA B40s, German army Hercules and the good ol' Canam.
I competed in Roadmaster twice, in 1988 and 1989 (timings were not good for me in the couple of previous years I'd been rallying) and due to some good results on Magnum Spirit and in other BAOR events in those years I was seeded 4th for both Championship events. In '88 my driver (Maj John Hay, a first timer Beginner) and I were the most successful competitors in the event, taking 5 trophies including 2nd Overall. In 1989, we were 2nd Overall again (it was John's 2nd event

) but only lifted 4 trophies.
In 1989 and 1990, I was Clerk of the Course for Ex Magnum Spirit and in 1989 asked to be non- competing team manager for the army entry into the RAC Scottish rally but work commitments forced me to decline. The 1990 Ex Magnum Spirit was cancelled because that naughty boy Saddam invaded Kuwait and all the Land Rovers disappeared.
I really hope motor sports in the army are getting going again but it seems there's a bit of work to be done to get things up to the level of the 'good ol' days'.
