By coincidence, I'm currently reading Military Blunders by Saul David and just finished the section on Market Garden. The whole operation was based on wishful thinking and denial of evidence. Would laughable if it wasn't so tragic.

My god-father, RIP, was involved in that Op and has featured in a few books - Was D Troop 10 Section of the 1st Airborne Division Reconnaissance Squadron. Was shot during the drop and taken POW and sent to Stalag XIB

It is, the journey starts tomorrow with a ferry to the big island.

That sound the sea makes as it ebbs over the pebbles. That has to be the single most relaxing noise I know. It's like the earth exhaling and chilling. It always stops me in my tracks and puts a smile on my boat race.

I know there are pebble beaches all over the place but that looks awfully like Herne Bay. Where is it really?

Selsey. Where the road through the town ends, by the car park. It was the tail end of a storm, shingle swept up all over the road. A couple of hours later, flat calm & fog!

Only 120 miles out. Still looks like Herne Bay.

Nope, weekend away.

I'd just had the Chiari diagnosis and was anticipating surgery later that year, so we took a few short breaks rather than plan, then have to cancel, a longer holiday.

That was Feb 2019. Surgery ended up being in Aug 2020 (after second and third opinions, then a fourth consultant did the op).

One of the best 'side benefits' of having children is getting to play in the park and stuff like that
