Bikes of that era are so easy to steal,if you were even considering punishing one with a commute. I do like the idea of stinking up the commute route, though.Taipan wrote: Mon May 26, 2025 5:17 pm I have thought about an older bike and have (fortunately) been outbid on a couple of RD400s in the past! I dont get a lot fo free time though, so i do need to ba able to commute on it too, or it'll never get used?

You certainly could commute on an RD and It would probably be more fun than the XADV but it wouldn't be as nice to ride
so you might not get to use it enough to warrant having it which is a shame.
You should get one anyway because they will never drop in value and when you do have some spare time
you can take it out for a braaaaaaap and have some fun on it

Comfort seat for an MT09 still isn't comfortable.Taipan wrote: Mon May 26, 2025 4:55 pm Well, I liked both my hypermotard and MT09 a lot! If i had to choose it'd probably be the MT09 and I still have a comfort seat and full Black Widow system for one too! I suppose it'd have to live alongside the xadv as riding a manual bike gets painful for me now. But then I think about another lot of tax and insurance and I'll have to move 3 vehicles off the drive to get to the back garden gates to get teh second bike in and out.I think i've just put myself off of it now!

The worst bike I've ever owned was an RD400C, closely followed by an RD400D, both were a lot worse than a 250LC that I had at the same time.

What you want is an aircooled RD250, they're much cooler...
I came 2nd in the Earlystocks 250 Modified class championship on that bad boy.
DT125R pistons with FAHRON tuned crank, heads and porting. It used to leave the stock 250LC's that I gridded with for dead (in a straight line), they stopped and went round corners a bit quicker tho'

I'd love a Rd250/400 or a 250/350LC or even a X7, just not sure when i'd actually use one? Mind you aren't old bikes ulez exempt?

What you want is a MZ TS250/1 Supa Five, while they're still half affordable.

I think it’s age related - Riverbank in Bow seem to have got a 2 stroke through.Taipan wrote: Tue May 27, 2025 8:17 pm I'd love a Rd250/400 or a 250/350LC or even a X7, just not sure when i'd actually use one? Mind you aren't old bikes ulez exempt?

Laughable and an object of derision to us youths as they were back in the day,the MZ looks a lot better to my eyes now! They've grown into their quirkiness.KungFooBob wrote: Tue May 27, 2025 8:22 pm What you want is a MZ TS250/1 Supa Five, while they're still half affordable.

Some people want silly money for them, but I see the odd one pop up around £1500. By all accounts they're actually quite nice to ride and keep up well with modern traffic... until you need to stop. It's a popular mod to fit a Honda TLS brake/front wheel... which the one in the pic looks to have.Skub wrote: Tue May 27, 2025 8:34 pmLaughable and an object of derision to us youths as they were back in the day,the MZ looks a lot better to my eyes now! Back in the day a lot of beemer boxer owners used to buy a Moon Zapper for Winter use, they were cheap and actually not badly finished. I recall the brakes as not being that bad,but it was the 70s and even disc brakes were marginal at best. Us lads watching that accordion shaped engine bouncing up and down on tickover was the source of great amusement.KungFooBob wrote: Tue May 27, 2025 8:37 pm Some people want silly money for them, but I see the odd one pop up around £1500. Re: NBT: I’ve just bought my forever bike, part 2!
Back in the early 00's I bought a MuZ 301 Saxon Tour NE at auction for £300 and used it as a winter hack/commuter for a couple of years.
I rode it like an utter twit, it lost a couple of gears from the box, but nothing a bit of clutch slip couldn't sort.
LOLZ, I just remember riding it back from the auction... I looped it wheeying it, got caught out by the exhaust that extended out past the rear wheel, did no damage except a few scratches on the end of the pipes and some scrapes on the luggage rack.

Re: NBT: I’ve just bought my forever bike, part 2!
I did some dispatching in the early 80s and a couple of the old boys had MZs for London runs and R80RTs for the distance work. It seemed to be an accepted stable for the older dispatchers! When i rocked up on my 350lc I got muchSkub wrote: Tue May 27, 2025 8:42 pmBack in the day a lot of beemer boxer owners used to buy a Moon Zapper for Winter use, they were cheap and actually not badly finished. Supposedly going tonight. Longest ownership period for me for many years. I love its quirky looks and 70+mog as a commuter is not to be sniffed at. Who knows I may have another at some point?
