I'm ok with a bit of banter, so crack on.

This would all be a lot less of an issue if I wasn't at Silverstone this weekend on it.

Here's where my night of lying in bed has got my thoughts

1. Leave as it is until after Silverstone
2. Use a bolt removal company/ thread doctor
3. Take to MSG Racing as he's a motorbike expert.

I'm honestly not sure which is the best plan here.

I have lined up a plan B which is a hire mt09 for Sat, so I'll be there and have a bike to use, it just may cost me £359!

If it were me I’d leave it until after Silverstone, it looks like it’s at the top of the case so it’s not going to leak. Hiring the MT sounds like madness - £359 to spend all day wondering how the XSR would have been isn’t good value...

It's better value than sitting there having wasted £250 to sit in pit lane.

I went with plan 3.... It's currently loaded on the trailer and will be scooting up to MSG racing as soon as my boy gets himself out of bed... That then gives him an extra couple of days if he finds a spare half hour to crack on and sort it.

As I said on Whatsapp I'd leave it to MSG like you are doing. Hopefully they can sort it.

With Jim Aim they said up to 2 weeks and they'd try and fit it in. I got a call the same day to say they had a no show and they sorted it in an hour, and I'm guessing the hour was for billing purposes rather than time it took them .

Like you I torqued mine up to 6nm and it snapped. I thought I was doing it for the best to avoid over tightening it and did the exact opposite. I think in future for my filter bolts I'd hand tight them. Guy at the KTM Centre said they use a socket on a screwdriver only as they snap too easily. Just wish I'd have know that before hand.

Hopefully they can sort and we can have a bit of a ride Fri.

I'm with Nidge on this, if it's just that one bolt I'll be very suprised if it leaks, and even if it did, it would be the tiniest amount and not a danger, I'd be still riding it until such times as Gav can sort it.

He sorted the broken exhaust stud in my multi a few weeks back when I swapped out the cat- say hello to him and thanks again to him if you do make it across there-, and don'tr forget, I'm only 15-20 mins from him these days in Speen, so you could always swing by and take the 890 for a bit of insurance for Saturday just in case he can't get it done in time - serious offer if you want it

Awww thanks mate, but really so far from being an option for me, i just wouldn't be happy with that as an option, despite the fact that i often give people the keys to mine on track :)

It's dropped off at MSG Racing and i'm hoping/thinking he'll get on it today rather than Friday. so at least i'll know soon.

Just bloody annoying wben it happens.
Just an aside, why use a bfo torque wrench on a 6mm thread.
1/4" drive socket is all that is needed, 2 white knuckles.
WEll it's easy saying what i should have done, but i did what the Yamaha manual and the instructions for the cover said, which was 10Nm, sure it now transpires what i should have done, but i never...

Simple enough, well, that remains to be seen.. I'm at Silverstone on Saturday.... or not.
Don't set the chain slack to the manual specs btw!
You'll be at silverstone on it on saturday, hopefully a 10 minute job.

THat's probably as he heard of you first  ;)

Seriously though, I'm genuinely suprised with your old locality and bike history as aside from the type of work he does (very heavily race/ trackday build/prep and dyno as well as the more mundane work) he really is Mr Gixxer, they are his speciality- http://www.msgracing.co.uk/home/

Anyway, glad we're all sorted, and , as Weeksy mentioned in my 890 thread, he and I managed to meet up midway between Thame and his place yesterday and did swapsies for 15 miles or so through some quite nice B and minor A roads, so I got to ride it bedore the bolt incident- I'd never tried an XSR before, previously had an MT09, but was a good few years ago , so my most immediate comparison would of course be the KTM 890 that I'd just stepped off.

First impressions were that its big, and has a much comfier/softer seat than the 890- it's certainly not big compared to, for instance, an MT10, and would feel smaller and light compared to that, but next to the 890, very much longer, roomier, and a bit heavier.
On the move, the immediate thing I noticed was at very low speed how sharp the front brake felt, much more so than the 890, albeit once you really get going, the 890s ultimately had more power and feel IMO

It was only a 15 mile ride, so by no means exhaustive, and I'd love to ride it some more and play around with the suspension a bit more to try and improve front end feel and front-rear balance, but overall I loved it- the CP3 engine really is a peach IMO, a decent amount of shove right from the off (albeit, I think the 890 has a bit more low down), and a true MT in character, with even 3rd gear wheelies off the throttle available if you want, and a real decent turn of speed, it's a proper fun bike 8-)
Much more refined/ smoother feeling motor than the 890, but I guess its got 50% more cylinders which helps with that a bit

I prefer the 890 in character , simply as it feels a fair bit smaller/ lighter and more agile, and that , weighed with the amount of go it has is THE big attraction of the 790/890 for me, but I think the XSR is a better looker, and one of the coolest looking nakeds out there- definitely a bike I'd like to ride again
