Wishing I actually liked and could eat lentils!!!

My dinner tonight is soup and a bit of baguette, slice of roasted ham with gravy and half a plate of lentils, and apple compote

Sadly, I don't eat lentils - so I can see the chocolate getting hit tonight!!

Due to the weather we haven’t gone away. So sat on the caravan on the drive drinking wine and deciding what to have from the Chinese, decided we were too drunk to cook!!

It was the last time. Utterly hilarious, I spoke very little German and they spoke even less English.

Sat in the garden, in the only area still to have sunshine, beer in hand, listening to the roar of the crowd from the Stadium of Light.

It is very pleasing to hear

There has been a real buzz around the city over the last year, football team have exceeded expectations, Radio 1 big weekend had been a big hit, there is a summer of music events planned across the city and hopefully the investment the Crown Works Studios continues.

Makes me very happy to be a Mackem*

* after 37 years I'm probably still not regarded by the locals as such, but it is home!

Where are you in the world? Sounds great, we’re sat in the garden near Birmingham airport so just passenger stuff. When I get home tomorrow I’m in the Daventry corridor so lots more normally.

Where are you in the world? Sounds great, we’re sat in the garden near Birmingham airport so just passenger stuff. When I get home tomorrow I’m in the Daventry corridor so lots more normally.

Layer-de-la-Haye, near Colchester. We have Abberton Reservoir behind our house, think they practice over that as relatively safe should things go wrong.

About 34 years ago I serviced the voltage regulators in the pumping station at the reservoir. It was the middle of winter and they'd had to dig a path out for us using JCB's as the snow was so deep.

Have they retrieved all the mines yet?

God knows, it looks lovely on the surface with all the wildlife but could be allsorts below the surface!

When we went there, in the entrance foyer to the control room there was a shiny brass mine looking like a small sea mine, the Control Room and Maintenance staff regaled us with the story of the mines. Apparently it was sown with mines to stop German Flying boats landing on it during WW2 but they were not maintained and looked after, so a lot broke free of their moorings/chains and were "lost". During the summer of 1976 the reservoir dried out and a dog walker spotted a lot of prongs sticking out of the mud in one corner of the reservoir. Bomb squad attended and found a lot of the missing mines all clustered where the prevailing winds had blown them.

They carefully took one away and blew it up in a controlled explosion, much to their annoyance it was a dud, so they tried again, another dud. This went one, blowing one mine up at the time until they had decided that they were all duds so blew a lot up at once........

.....unfortunately some of them were still "live" and some of the houses in nearby villages needed new windows.

So they went back to one at a time.

There is no active threat from live ordnance at Abberton Reservoir. During World War II, the Ministry of Defence laid 312 naval mines in the water to deter seaplane landings. Most were detonated after the war, and a prolonged dry spell in the late 1980s prompted an Army disposal team to safely detonate the remainder.
