Re: Stealth Omicron
1) How many people arena hospital with omicron ?
2) How many people are in ICU with omicron?
3) How many people have died from it?
And then the above - but with 2 inoculations and a booster?

Also, there's previously been a lag (2 weeks?) from infection to hospitalisation and further lag to deaths. When did omicron become the dominant variant?

Omicron won’t really be covered in any stats as yet - it hasn’t had a lot of time to its stuff. The next couple of weeks will interesting though…Horse wrote: ↑Sat Dec 18, 2021 10:19 pm people have died from it?

Re: Stealth Omicron
Indeed. Even if few are hospitalised, high numbers suffering and off work for a few days will have far-reaching effects.

Re: Stealth Omicron
Okay I'll start with the current situation:
Most London (and many other large Trusts) have been operating at well above 90% of their capacity for several weeks. Hello "winter pressures" anyone?
London Amublance (and again many others) have been operating at REAP 4 (i.e major incident level esscalation) for several months.
People are broken, tired and are being asked to go again. Many were redeplpoyed to wards/ICU's as part of surge teams during the peak of Delta. At least two of my previous team, went down with stress/PTSD as result. Mostly due to stress of ICU work and high volume of acuity/death.
One of my colleagues got Covid, and ended up being transferred to a specialist unit for ECMO (machine lung bypass) - this was after his family said good bye to him as he wasn't expected to survive. His rehab has take over 6 months.
Another ED nurse died of Covid. A service was held for her, and her hearse did a lap of the hospital. That brought things home.
I lead a Covid resuscitation and outreach team in the first wave. Although we didn't get hit too bad, compared to London, it was hard working in full PPE (FFP3 mask, surgical gown, goggles, double gloves). You need twice the amount of people, and everything takes 3 times as long.
In the second wave, I got myself seconded to the Covid Ops Centre - which I found harder. I remember coming in one Monday, and having to report about 40 deaths that had occured over the weekend. A neighbouring Trust, was on the bones of it's arse re staffing, they'd gone into the night shift with one nurse (don't know how many HCA's) to a ward.
Omicron:
Start with this:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... -briefings
Fyi hospitalisations and deaths are lagging indicators. This has only had a name for about 3 weeks, it's early days. I've been on a couple of webinar briefings with NHSE (inc Chris Witty etc) and the messaging has been consistent re data and science. The Sun/Daily Mail/Express etc can go fuck themselves.
I'm currently working in Health Emergency Planning within the London catchment area. Omicron doesn't have to be more "deadly", as has been previously pointed out - with a high R number and secondary attack rate, combined with immune escape and reinfection potential it has the ability to cause serious fucking problems. Given the current shit state, due to lack of beds and staffing, it won't take as much as the Delta wave to push things over the edge.
Yes, cancer, non-urgent care will suffer, but it is not being forgotten about. It will be part of ongoing recovery planning, and some hopsitals will be designated "cold" sites, where no Covid pt's are present, and can crack on with urgent stuff.
In the meantime, take on some societal responsibility and get fucking vaccinated if you haven't already. As the Bard put it "Everyone wanna be a gangsta, till it's time to do gangsta shit". Amazingly brave when their own wellbeing isn't percievabily on the line.

It still amazes me that the government - and many people on here (I remember who) - said nurses shouldn't have a larger pay rise than they got.

Re: Stealth Omicron
Dinner at ours tonight, neighbours round. We're all triple jabbed and took LFs beforehand. It's a ballache but really trying to do our bit when it comes to spreading.
Now I've had a few though - bollocks to the selfish bastard voluntarily-unvaccinated, this wave is all on them.

I don't care if millions of people die as long as they don't close the schools again and I have to try to work and look after / educate my kids simultaneously.

Re: Stealth Omicron
As I'm sure you would expect, absolutely agree with you.
If this was a disease where the voluntarily-unvaccinated were infecting and killing children everybody would be up in arms.
But since it seems that it's largely the voluntarily-unvaccinated ending up jamming hospitals it's somehow within their human rights to decline vaccination.
Now here's a thing, my human rights are being infringed by the selfishness of voluntarily-unvaccinated. Unfortunately, they won't just die quietly in some private corner, they'll have to be looked after in hospital.

Re: Stealth Omicron
Now you’re getting it. Although I’m not sure what rights are being infringed (at the moment)?

Re: Stealth Omicron
If you care to read my previous posts you will see that I "got it" long ago.
Just for starters, my "Right of Private & Family Life" is being infringed.

Well, I can still go where I want and see who I want, unfortunately including family.

Re: Stealth Omicron
What about the other people whose life choices land them in hospital to die? Are they infringing your human rights? Or is it just the people who don't want to take part in the great gene therapy experiment?

Re: Stealth Omicron
You asked the question, you received the answer. If you don't want to see your family that's your choice.

Re: Stealth Omicron
"Right of Private & Family Life"
You have the right to live your life privately without government interference
Sounds like freedom to not be vaccinated, however much officialdom suggests that you should be.

"The other people" have a perfect right to make such choices even if those choices land them in hospital to die.
Stinky bait BTW.

Not when we want to, only when permitted by government restrictions.
