It looked a bit like a 'p' with the straight line going up as far as it does down according to Chambers dictionary....can't find one on this keyboard! I hadn't put the 2+2 about 'ye' together though.

That's the badger! That's what Chambers has as 'th' or 'thorn'. Them Icelanders are a bit Norse too. You're right though it's not very Y'ish.
