10mins ago I was sat in my nice warm car at some traffic lights watching the sparks fly from a passing tram, framed again the dark rainy sky. I could have happily sat there for hours... But I didn't and now I'm at work.

I only go in to work 3 days a week but am struggling to manage that in the winter.

I only go in to work 3 days a week but am struggling to manage that in the winter.

Instead of sitting in the pissing rain on a bike for 40 mins this morning, I walked a twatty hound in the pissing rain for 40 mins.

And all set to sit through the big dept meeting, discussing accounting, tax, audit requirements....zzzzzz.

I've just had a late breakfast. Bit of a treat after the last three and a half months!! Sadly missing the black pudding, but it'll do. It was home made bread!!

I bailed on hitching to the valley to get some of the most awesome cheddar I've ever had (Lidl's special, starts today - last time it sold out before I could go back for more!! But it's also a REALLY good price, so I've asked a couple of friends to pick some up for me!! What doesn't fit in the fridge can go in the freezer! )

Now trying to persuade myself that I really should go to the garage to get my ski trousers so I can go for little ski tour in the sunshine. Sadly I just don't feel like anything more than sitting on the sofa all day - but I know I should do more!!

Waiting for results is as bad as doing the bastarding exams!!

Just chilling on the patio and can hear fireworks in the distance.
It's a mega festival tmrw.

But it's sunny and bright so no bugger will see the fireworks. Maybe should have been after dark?

Got a call from my step dad’s carers to say they found him on the bedroom floor and have called an Ambo. I’ve come round but can’t move him as he’s a dead weight and cries out when I try to move him. Ambo will be up to 2 hours. So nothing I can do but wait…

Try to make him as comfortable as you can, pillow, etc. Blanket / quilt to keep him warm.

Sorry to hear that mate. As said, warm and comfortable as you can. You're doing as much as you can and moving him may cause further injury if something is broken.
Sips of water to keep him hydrated and try to sound confident and cheery as you can.

As i couldnt move him and they couldnt get an ambo there, they sent out 2 nurses and a guy from occupational therapy. All were fecking brilliant. H ecant stand/weigh bear so theyre going to get a bed and air mattress thing to try and keep him out of hospital. We've added another carers call and i'm off to buy incontinence pants for him. So sad to see his dignity stripped away, but as they say when you get old you dont just get the bus pass! I hope this makes sense as i left my bastard glasses round there! and havent got a clue wha im typoing!

Oh man,this is a repeatedly familiar scenario from a couple of years ago. My Da,step mother,mother in law and next door neighbour. Every one a hip done in. Old folks don't bounce well.

Thinking of ya TinPan,it's a shit show when you are in the middle of it.

Warming up after a ride to my favourite cafe. I now have a genuine need to clean the bike and tuck her away for the next few months.

Storm Darragh just brewing up now. Pissing down and cold too. Horrible.

This is another area where folk won't help because they are shit scared of legal comeback. My neighbour has fallen many times,often just a gentle slide to the floor,but she did fall and break her hip outside a couple of years ago. On that occasion I didn't try to move her as she was in pain,I wrapped her up warm with my heated bike jacket and blankets and waited for the ambulance.

She now has carers coming to the house several times a day and they are forbidden to lift anyone,they are instructed to phone for an ambulance. I've told them to try for me first to save any protracted waiting,or wasting resources already stretched to breaking point. So I go over and make sure she's not in any pain,then lift her up. We have the farcical situation where young carers in their 20s and 30s are made to stand and watch while someone not far off their 70th orbit of the sun does the lifting.

A fine example of health and safety regulations working against common sense.

This is from a US site, but will be similar here:

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), occupational back injury is the second leading occupational injury in the United States. Among health care personnel, nurses have the highest rate of back pain, with an annual prevalence of 40-50% and a lifetime prevalence of 35-80%. The American Nursing Association believes that manual patient handling is unsafe and is directly responsible for musculoskeletal disorders encountered in nurses.

Another factor is skin tearing in the elderly. eg Things like pulling on the waistband of trousers.
