Mechanical experts - Help needed.

I thought metric was metric. But no.

Had to buy a front brake lever guard for the Suzuki . So took the 12mm bolt out of the bar end and wandered into town to buy a longer one.
Bugger, it's a finer thread than standard 8mm
No shops had them.

So had to buy another guard with adapter kit.

Somewhere 'round here I've a little doodad I kept from Mercedes GP just to prove how daft F1 is sometimes. It's got MJ5* threads on the inside, MJ7 on the outside and a 95° countersink Nobody uses 7mm threads...except Mercedes F1.

It puts extra requirement on the root like a whitworth. So presumably better for strength and fatigue and so on

Some Borg Warner turbochargers use M7x1.0 bolts. They need an 11mm spanner to undo them

Back in the day I would go down to my local ironmonger and tell him what I want and he would either produce one from the dusty recesses of he shop, or at least tell me what to search for elsewhere. Unfortunately ironmongers are no more.

Any ideas?

A year or so ago I had a similar problem. I don't remember whether I needed a nut to fit a screw or a screw to fit a nut, but I took the offending item to B&Q and the nice man there was very helpful. That's where I'd start.

Most of the staff at B&Q won't know a screw from a nut....

And much of the stuff is now sealed in little plastic pouches, so no more try before you buy.
