In the OP poll the question ...

Simple question: assisted dying, yes or no?

Yes (with adequate safeguards, obviously 25, 96%

No 1, 4%

... will almost certainly have many different definitions of what are considered to be "adequate safeguards".

I don't think the poll was intended to be a legally enforeable statement, just indicative of how people felt about the issue.

As for 'adequate safeguards' the devil is always in the detail. Anyone replying to the poll would have their own idea of what 'adequate safeguards' would translate to and would vote on that basis.

Safeguards will evolve, either tightening or relaxing, and public opinion (probably as measured by the Dailly Mirror) will drive the changes.

Have the Dutch had many contested cases, outrages or accusations of criminality? I've not seen any but I've not been looking, and I'd expect those against the proposal to highlight any negatives.

I'd ask my brother who lives there but he's gone full ex-pat and I'm not sure I'd take his word as unbiased.

This terrible and ungodly law seems to be proceeding.

Surely this is not right. Six months is not enough for the young to influence the situation to off these righteous inheritance squanderers.

Euthanasia will absolutely, definitely only be available for people with terminal illnesses. There is no thin end of the wedge, the slippery slope is a myth.

If I was mentally ill I think I should have the right to end my illness. Most mental illnesses are terminal in that they cannot be cured except by death. Likewise anyone with debilitating conditions that medicine cannot cure, I certainly would not like to end my days with 10 years as a dribbling wreck in an old peoples home.

And, with suitable safeguards (eg a 3 month delay, mandatory chats with counsellors) they should be allowed to do so. There are enough humans on this planet without hanging on to those who want to leave.

Alzheimer's ultimately kills people and strips the person apart day by day. Having been through this with my step mum and now my mother-in-law I hope i'll be able to stipulate that once I stop recognising my children, I want to be chucked in a sarco pod!

Exactly. Let's ban the Samaritans. Bloody do-gooders, wasting their time on losers.

Don't know about the Samaritans, but I have twice had suicidal people on the phone to CA. They didn't want to kill themselves, they had a problem that they couldn't solve. Sort out the problem and they stopped thinking of suicide.

I suspect many Samaritans clients are like that too.

I don't want to make it easy for people to top themselves on a whim, I do want to make it possible for those who genuinely want out and have carefully considered it.

Hard to believe we are in 2024 and this is still an issue. Having watched somone slowly waste way with MND, it's a firm yes.

TBH - most days I think we should just have to select those who should stay alive
