I worked a temp job at a machine shop South of Cambridge where they had a punch press that could turn 4x8ft of sheet metal into slugs the same size as the old £1 coins. They'd fill a steel drum with them which took about a month to empty via the pockets of the employees who used vending machines for cigs etc.
The machine was normally used to make flat washers.

I'm becoming an accidental expert on old money since Muz decided to take up metal detecting 🤣

This is the nicest coin he's found by far, so far (It's a silver Roman Denarius 😱, currently residing with the local finds liaison officer for cataloguing)...
