I get that it's supposed to evoke hazy feel-good memories of 80s GP bikes, but when you look at the rear end in side view there is a ridiculous amount of space between the bodywork and rear wheel. Just look at this:

The seat profile needs to extend further back and further down, covering up some of that open space and making the whole thing look less boxy. IMHO, of course.

I'm not certain & someone will correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the long number plate hanger a legal / homologation requirement? Doesn't the nomber plate OR rear light have to be behind the rear wheel? Hence all those long plate hanger's on current bikes,for example on the CBR650?

Correct.

As with all tails, that doesn't mean it needs to remain :)

I like the idea of it, but the donor bike is just the wrong shape.
Yamaha have done really well with the both the 700 and 900 motors that you'd think they'd splash out on a full new rolling chassis for a bike like this.

Certainly for some countries (Germany being one of them) there is a regulation about numberplate / rear wheel distance - hence the proliferation of those types of hangers - they are getting more and more common. When they first appeared on the Buell XB they looked very odd - we are now getting used to them.
And most get removed in the first few months!

I believe it also has to cover a certain angle from the wheel too, to prevent spray rooster-tailing.

I was following a trainee a while back who'd done the tail tidy thing... it was so high and tucked away, the bike was kicking spray off the rear tyre almost vertically!

Most of its fine, the tail looks like the streetfighters where some gonk has flipped the bike and didn't have the required skills to put it back right. Often spotted on beat up Slabside GSXRs ridden by mullet haired Simson Bandit wearing 80s throwbacks.
Its still 100% better than any cafe racer I've ever seen though cos its got all the bits required to keep it running and they haven't chucked the airfilter.

If you put a YZF750 race seat on it it would look nice, it would be piss easy to do, my feelings about buying an XSR900 were that it would be easy to make it look nice, but that I didn't want to buy a brand new bike and modify it to make it look better.

Same sentiment here,it's why I bought a Street Triple,yet as a Yamaha fan I keep looking at their 900 triples.

Lots of bikes come with chopped back ends these days from the showroom, but they have those horrible splash gaurd things and side mounted plates.

You mean the bits that you take off and then it sprays water everywhere ?

Mine has a massive plate holder and a top box and it still sprays all over it's own rear seat. Makes me wonder just how bad it'd be with nothing there!
