The owners should also be put down with their dogs. Hopefully that will start to drain the gene pool of the fuckwits who want them.

I love dogs. I DO NOT love that owners think all dog lovers are happy to be jumped up at, sniffed or pawed at. And, FFS, if you have a dog off a lead call the bastard thing back when there are loads of people around  Cos not everyone does like dogs!!!

A mate has a lovely dog that has almost learnt that I do not want her to like my hands or legs  He rarely has her on a lead in the interseason cos, there's hardly anyone around.

The other day we were at a cafe that was open and another friend came up with his dog and another friends dogs. They also weren't on leads because the do come to call - usually.

But one of them started playing with my friends dog and off they ran. His dog doesn't (well, very rarely) come to call and he was very calm and chilled about that, but my other mate ended up walking up the road to the snow front to get them back    I was very embarrassed to be with drinking with someone that wouldn't take responsibility when it was obvious that the other dog owner was not happy :( :(

The people who own Xl bullys around here are exactly the sort of people you would expect to. In all likelihood, the dogs will have a higher IQ than the owners - and better social skills.

I would suggest the answer in the UK is actually much more severe custodial sentences for the owners. But that common sense approach hasn't worked with guns, or knives

That's people for you; there's enough out there who only think about themselves, or are oblivious (consciously?) of anyone else, and do what they want to do, and sod the rest of you.

I much prefer dogs :)

Smokers and Dog Owners innit, most oblivious to how they effect others.

Cat owners know their fur scroungers are cunts, they just don't care. Bit like cats really.

I should teach a dog to smoke.

Had a quick look at dog and puppy ads on free ads website. XL Bully pups from £200, huge adults from £200.
Cane Corso, who I suspect may be the next 'problem' breed, adolescent and adults from £200 'Don't have time for him', 'Didn't realise he would grow so big,' 'Great with kids but we're having a baby so has to go' :eh:
Everything that's wrong with the UK and dangerous dogs is right there. Too many back yard breeders knocking out cheap pups to stupid people who don't know what they're buyng, before trying to shift them on to other people who don't know what they're buying. And those words keep cropping up in almost every ad, 'Great family pet'. They're not.

I quite like this guy (despite him being American). He's a dog trainer who specialises in Cane Corso's, and tells people why they shouldn't buy one. Unfortunately chavs won't care, an imposing dog for £200 is too good to turn down :(

Isn't the Beagle the choice breed for smoking dogs? I have a feeling they have a history of it.

Yep. They leave dog ends everywhere....

I agree with banning fighting dogs. Like guns, the fact that you want to own one should preclude you from ever having one. But...

Licensing dogs? Let's be honest, the 'bad owners' won't be bothered with that, pretty much like they don't insure their cars and indulge in a little bit of gear for personal use/gain.

What is an American Bully XL? Sure you can do a genetic test, but that level of detail occurs after it's pulled somebody's face off.

Once you've banned them, the knuckle-draggers will move on to the next breed, Carne Corso x Staff x Honey Badger. 'Lovely animal, mate. Your's for £200'.

Those people who don't want a ban, what would you have them do instead?

Put a "XL Bully puppies for 200 GBP" ad on gum tree
And then exterminate everyone who replied

Ban breeding by anyone who doesn't have a license.
Create a centralised agency to deal with breeding, rather than leaving it up to cash-strapped councils to oversee.
Make it difficult to obtain a breeding license; no criminal records; site visits to ensure there is plenty of private and secure land available to exercise the dogs; each site can only specialise in one breed and the number of breeding dogs limited by the m2 of the land and the size of the dwelling (dwelling, not warehouse); all breeding dogs to be health tested and undergo genetic screening; a legally binding contract between breeder and buyer that all pups will be neutured by a certain age (breed dependent); all sales to be recorded in minute detail on a central database with both parties having to register the sale/purchase. Huge fines for any unauthorised selling of a pup, along with similar fines for anyone buying from an unregistered breeder.
Bring in legislation to stop all selling sites from accepting ads unless proof of being an authorised breeder is produced, with the onus being on the sites to obtain the proof or face large fines.

The above would not only make the banning of certain breeds more workable, it would also alleviate the pressure on rescues and allow them to work with breeders when homings don't work out, as opposed to the current situation where breeders are viewed as almost satanic by rescues. There used to be a lot of prestige involved in breeding, and rightly so. When you put some thought to it, it's pretty amazing how knowledgeable people have for centuries created breeds specific to our needs. Over the past 4 decades, the great unwashed have gotten in on the act and completely fucked it up.

No doubt there are flaws in the above suggestions, but they make a better starting point than banning them and hoping the back yard breeders are too thick to come up with workarounds (which they will). The govt have been 'in consultation' for the last 4 years on how to tackle rising dog attacks. And yet, their only solution is to fall back on the same legislation that has been in place for over 30 years, during which time dog attacks have continued to increase

It's a lovely idea, but who would police this? The Plod are too busy investigating nasty Facebook posts and doling out speeding tickets for going over 20mph. How will they stop a trakkie-wearing ne'er-do-well getting his dog to hump his incestuously-related cousin's dog and flogging the resulting pups later, along with an 'Enry of gear and some shop-lifted bottles of booze?
Your law-abiding dog owner isn't the type to own a Bully XL in the first place.

And when my mastiff bitch gets pregnant by something by accident, what am I allowed to do with the 7 adorable pups? I can guarantee that making it compulsory to euthanize them will get you unelected.

is adhered to, and the fine for unplanned puppies is high enough to ensure that people take responsibility for keep bitches in heat inside and dogs that are not neutered on a lead, then it shouldn't be an issue?

It's about responsible ownership isn't it? Have the dogs neutered and the bitches spayed and look out for both until such time as they are 'done' and you won't have 'accidental' pregnancies

I know you lot generally dislike cats, but none of mine had or caused accidental litters of kittens as the males were neutered as soon as I got them (or were already 'done' by the rescue place) and the females the same - both kept inside until such time as they could be the cause of or carry kittens!

Problem is, you do that and a lot of pregnant dogs will end up in the canal and even at that the local chab breeders will still take the risk when there's a few grand of pups to be sold. My full Rottie girl is in heat at the minute, if I kept her in, she'd go absolutely apeshit, I have to walk her along with the other two in the hope that they'll put any randy males to flight.

My housecat got herself pregnant despite never leaving the house. The local tomcat decided to come in and help himself, the dirty big shite.
