We have them indoors, of course that we test them and have a flamm lab set up with sufficient extraction and wear positive pressure air might be a deciding factor

The measured RF emissions from supposed EMC compliant switch mode power supplies coming out of china turn out to all be false - so I won't be believing a word they say about the safety of their batteries.

It happened to me in the 70s.

Head down at the bench,working away and my peripheral vision catches something. A mate brought in a ferret and the thing was doing about 160mph towards my head. A surreal moment.

I remember when the first cheapo Chinese MTB lights started arriving 10 years ago or so, there was a spate of fires reported on MTB forums where the batteries had gone bang whilst being charged and ruined kitchens/sheds etc. I ordered one of eBay lights, and the charger, though CE marked looked anything but so it was always charged outside. Fortunately the light died soon after that so I bought a HOPE light. I've not heard of a Hope or MTB batteries (or any other recognised make) catching fire.

From the videos of the fires it seems like it's the dodgy home built stuff or e-scooters going bang. Again I've not heard of a Shimano. Bosch, Dafon (build batteries for Shimano) or Specialized catching fire though @millemille might have more info from the emtb forums.

Part of the problem is that the cheap (and dodgy) E-Scooters/Motorbikes/Bikes from China are seen as cheap/tax and insurance free transport, appealing to the less affluent parts of society as low cost runarounds without appreciating the risks.

I think more regulation and prosecutions on sales by Trading Standards and stronger import controls are needed, along with eBay etc being invited to a "strongly worded listening to" by the Govt.

So long as you stick to recognised makes and buy from reputable shops you should be OK. As usual the press are hyping it up with poor clarification of the details. I've not yet seen one report saying stop buying cheap dodgy knockoff stuff off eBay (other purveyors of dodgy shite are available). I would like to see the stats from Trading Standards and the Fire Brigade on what's gone bang, manufacturer and where purchased etc.

Southern and lot of train operators have banned e-scooters, e-hoverboards etc . E-Bikes and Mobility Scooters are not banned, however one iffy homebuilt or dodgy import bike fire may change that (though speaking to the Station staff at my home station, they'd be hard pressed to tell if a bike like my Evil was electric or not).

Well if you want to compare apples to oranges you feel free, but in terms of batteries, what with that being the thread subject, and discounting the fly by night Chinese suppliers, I stand by my original quote, that most compliance claims are not false.

It won't make a dent in the problem, any chancer can drop ship and advertise on facebook marketplace, Etsy or ebay, Temu et al won't give a flying fig either.

I think the comparison between mobile phone and e-scoot batteries/BMS is well off the mark.
Nearly all phone batteries are integrated into the phone and will be sold in the 100s of thousands or millions.
If a phone has a design or manufacturing defect that causes fires it's likely to be known pretty quickly and action taken. e.g. Samsung Note 7, where 96% of the entire production run were recovered.
Due to the sophistication and very tight packaging not many people are likely to cadge together a phone, but they do with e-scoots. The barrier to entry for producing them is also much lower so there's many more no-name (or alphabet soup brands) putting them together, with possibility of mismatch between battery and management system being much higher.
Of course, modern phones are often very well sealed against the environment (and if they aren't the owners will likely want to shield them) whereas scoots may well have ingress of water due to both their build and use.
Then there's the obvious capacity difference and hence potential for fire to get out of hand.

I'm not an e-scoot / e-bike / EV naysayer, but they do present a new fire safety challenge.

FYI - the London Fire Brigade reported 8 fires caused by e-bikes and e-scooters in 2019, 24 in 2020 and 59 in 2021...might well be a trend!

No, mains only, so that if there is a power source explosion, it can happen else where, so that we're net zero explosion, fire free.
