Moscow for me...and they'd take it off me as I leave via Sheremetyevo...again!

My dad lived here 30 years and everytime we came here, he'd say "Britain's a shithole."

I defended the UK to the hilt and we had arguments.

I can now see what he meant.

Perhaps you should just get on living where you are, with whomever you are living with, than worry about places (The UK apparently) you have been being a shithole.
I have been to many shitholes - Moscow, Lagos, Jakarta, Delhi, 200km south of Moscow, Maputo, Soweto, Alexandra (Jo'burg in general), Tunis, bits of Istanbul.
I've lived in a few - Stoke on Trent, Leeds, Birkenhead, London

Quite frankly, I am too old to live anywhere I hated for 2 years - so sod the million

And I am really happy where I am in this cesspool of Great Britain - maybe you just need to chose the area better

I guess if a place is good enough to live in, one wouldn't continuously seek affirmation from others....

It's never been the actual place that's made me unhappy anyway.

If a million dropped in my lap I might move...there's a place just come on the market...500 yards away.

To the vehement ex pats: Have you moved to somewhere that has geographic or climatic features that England just hasn't got?

It's you that decides whether or not your happy, not your geographic location.

I don't really think I'm 'vehement' (I would never describe the UK as a shithole, it just doesn't suit me anymore), but I'll answer anyway!! I have!! I bloody love snow. I like sun but couldn't live anywhere as hot as Yorick does. So for me, the weather is way better here Skiing and cold and dry in the winter and sunny and biking weather in the summer (too hot in the valley to live down there, but happy to visit )

100% - talking to a family member yesterday and one of their inlaws (and family) has moved from the UK to NZ and back once, UK-Oz-UK two or three times and is now talking about moving from the UK to France. He's fully expecting the family to be back in the UK in a few years! That, to me, isn't someone looking to settle somewhere different, that someone who can't settle and be happy 'in the moment'. No where is 'right'. Which is a bit sad.

(I they were going for work or something specific then fair enough, but this is a need to move to find somewhere better rather than anything else)

I dunno Nogs, I have a few friends that are/have been expats and they just get 'itchy feet syndrome'. It's not necessarily that they hunting for the perfect place, it's the excitement and anticipation/challenge of each new move and the 'Woo! This is all new' feeling. It takes a fair bit of time and effort so there isn't, initially, time to get bored.

Then, eventually, they want to do it all again. It's a bit like going on BIG hollibobs.

On the happiness thing, very much so. Where I live attracts those who move to get away from their problems, despite their problems being in their heads. That's not a judgement on them or their problems just an observation.

I would happily go back to the place I was most unhappy. The person who made it unhappy is dead. Where do I collect my £1,000,000?

Not so. My opinions are valid. Only idiots will argue with opinions.

I was fairly happy in UK. I'm a lot happier here. I worked hard for years to achieve this.

That's not a pissing content.

The place I was unhappiest is about a mile from the place I was happiest, location has little to do with happiness, happiness is a state of mind, not a place.

I think both places are the same place for me.

Can I just have half a million then?

They do say your problems often get on the removal van before your furniture does.

I'd be tempted but TBH I like my life as it thanks very much. On the other hand, treat it like a sabbatical - I'm sure time would fly by and a million would pay for a lot of treats. The rules don't say I can't take a lot of very very long holidays?

Chicken and egg though innit. S'not like you choose to live somewhere and then decide to become happy/miserable after the fact. Or vice versa.

There's no real strong correlation for me, but as above I've not ever lived anywhere I truly disliked. But then again, maybe I didn't dislike them because I was otherwise generally OK.

Prince Harry doesn't seem that well put together and he's only ever lived in spectacular gaffs. And Afghanistan for a bit, which he seems to have quite enjoyed.

No i bought my house after a lot of consideration. I wanted to move more inner city to save on travel costs in and out of the city and also wanted to move to a more liberal area.

I looked at other houses prior but the feel of the area was not for me. TBH i have worked for so long over most places in Bristol i pretty much knew the areas i wanted to buy in.

Location etc 100% makes a difference to me, so does the people i live around. No doubt in some posher area's my toking and loud music would get reported, around here they ask me to turn it up!

The worst places i ever lived were more affluent area's were everyone was on your case for everything. It was keep up with the Jones' and every conversation would be about money. We moved out of those places after a while as my old man lost his well paid job and never then really lived anywhere very affluent after that.
