£5.71 per day for food allowance  I would be lucky to get a Gluten Free sandwich for that even if i could find an shop around the court that sells them. That was part of my reasoning for wanting let off as well as. Rectal tenesmus was another and i need to be close to a shitter

The government or your employer
My employer only allows for two weeks and I think the government allowance is less than generous. I looked it up when I was self employed and hoped I'd never get the letter.
A warm feeling of civic duty doesn't pay the bills.
You will not be paid for doing jury service, but you can claim some money back if your earnings are affected. For each day you're at court, you can usually claim: up to £64.95 to help cover your loss of earnings and the cost of any care or childcare outside of your usual arrangements. £5.71 for food and drink.

Yeah 64 quid a day, joke if you are self employed. My firm are paying me full pay and claim 64 quid off the government each day. I work for a law firm though so be a bit rich for them not to support the Jury Service. I can claim 5.71 for food and car parking should be covered. 34p a mile for petrol so you def lose out there as well.

I thought you can only claim the £64 if you lose earnings?

Work claim my loss of earnings and pay me that, I have to submit a loss of earnings claim from work to the court on a government form so presume thats normal for PAYE. Then work choose to top me up to my full pay, they don't have to do that but choose to.

Then one day, there will no-one to sit go Jurys, because nobody can be arsed.
Then you will be tried by judges - who will be part of the establishment.

Then you will all start whinging " it's not fair"

I got called just as we were about to move home from one side of London to the other, so was excused. Would have been happy to do it and would now. Wife did 2 weeks at Crown court and got an interesting case.

I don't think anyone has suggested they can't be arsed, that's not the same as not wanting to do compulsory unpaid work.

Fair enough - I am sure that the courts will be more than happy to scrap the process - will save them time and hassle. And a judge who will find according to all the information he has on you.

Or what would you suggest as an alternative - I believe Bench Trials only have a judge - but no idea how that works
Yes, I have done it. Two weeks

Never been asked.

Can't imagine why.

Maybe they just mark all Scousers with a "not guilty" for the defendant

Maybe covering losses adequately for people who have more than a part time minimum wage job. Would you rather members of the jury are more concerned about making it a fair trial or a quick trial?

71 years old is the age limit in Scotland albeit it’s not a limit as such, you can still be a jury member if you like but you can be excused if 71 and above if you don’t want to do it.

For the OP, what reason did you give for not wanting or being able to do it? They seem to excuse people from doing it these days rather easily.

In Germany you are paid by the State ( not sure how it works)
My employers refused to pay me because of this. And I suggested that I would no longer travel doing the job they paid me to in my own time, would no longer stay over on long haul trips etc.
In the end we came to an agreement - which involve them paying me.
The 65 GBP per day does need to be looked at.

I did jury duty about 4 years ago, I was called up for 2 weeks. I spent the first 2 days sitting asround doing nothing, was called up on the third day to listen to an assault case. Half a day deliberating then we were dismissed. Back to work on the Friday.

So what's the difference between a judge finding according to the information they have in you and a dozen random people, some of whom may be thick as pigshit and will blindly go along with whatever a showy barrister tells them or may just find on the fact they don't like the defendant because they're a ginger/black/Scouse/bogtrotter etc ...?
