I had the same advice after having a tree taken down - but the oil was to make sure the stump died, not rotted.

My neighbour used to soak the foot of his fenceposts in a mix of old motor oil and diesel and as a yoot when I worked on farms we were forever dousing fencing with it. It was the cheap version of creosote. And farmers seem to have plenty of used motor oil and certainly loads of cheap dlesel.

I would imagine DEFRA and a few other people might frown on that sort of thing these days.

Which probably means it's more common than ever.

Farmers are just about the only people who are still allowed to buy proper creosote, not the water based stuff the general public have to use.

Old brake fluid, personally I drink it. I'm not addicted though, as I can stop any time.
