My old home area. I used to walk past Mott'soriginal shop in the town centre on the way to 6th form.

Later, I spent a lot of time in Brookvale (as mentioned in the article). On a Sunday afternoon the sound of engines was really intrusive. A journalist lived a few doors along in Lower Brook Street. I pointed out that at least four engines could be heard. All lawn mowers in back gardens ...

It amazed me too that it was allowed to continue.

For those unaware, it was a 'roundabout' that had a circumference of 1 1/4 miles, on the west side of the ring road.

The original plans probably included a smaller roundabout, flyover, slip roads etc.

But ...

It was where the old Thorneycroft factory used to dump heavy metals waste from their plating baths.

The fear was that major earthworks would disturb this. Which potentially could be catastrophic because Basingstoke's water borehole was just across the road.

I've no idea how they solved it.
Even bland can be a type of character :wave:
