My last 2 and current car have the filter cartridge front and centre at the top of the engine, bloody marvellous idea as I've not had to get under a car in years

Most BMW's have the filter at the top of the motor too.

ITSR my old E30 BMW had a filter mounted vertically, seal side down. Something weird like that anyway.

BMW's usually have a paper filter element that fits inside a housing with a black plastic screw on top, rather than a screw on metal bodied jobbie.

Honestly can't remember the last time I used one! I've always done them up by hand and it must be at least 10 years since I came across one I couldn't also undo by hand. They tend to get undone fairly often after all, it's not like they have much chance to get properly shitty and crusted on.
Fair play if you've got one of those annoying engines where they're recessed down an 'ole though.

Well I don't own one of the wrench type ones and I've changed the oil in my Speed Triple loads of times...so I must've figured it out

As ai approach Gifferdom, I can certainly say I've changed a lot of oil filters in my time. I've only ever done them up by hand and never had one come loose.
When I struggle to undo an oil filter I always wonder what else the gorilla-handed previous owner has overtightened on the bike. It's not normally a good sign IME...

I put mine into the main dealer for its 6000 mile service so that it could have a nice stamp in the service book.
When I came to change the oil this past winter I had to resort to violence to get the filter off. Thought I'd best check everything else they'd have touched and found they'd apparently just not bothered putting various brake hose clips back on. grrr.
