Sounds similar to the problem I had with a car. Would start cold then act up when warm. Eventually, got to a destination then had to call the RAC as it wouldn't fire at all. Got it towed to the repair place and when they got round to it, it started first time. Had an inkling it was a coil issue as someone had complained it interfered with their tv.

I suppose when it happens you could check to see what the spark looks like? (If a plug is easy to get at).

Just fit a new pair of coils, they're about £18 each off eBay

Not as long as you might think. About 4-5 years ago.

I used to park it in the same car park space every time I used a particular car park - quite frequently. Came back to it one day and found a note under the wiper (in a scrawly hand) saying please park somewhere else as your car interferes with my TV. I was a little surprised as it was in the morning (who watches morning TV!?) and I thought that sort of thing only affected analogue. (I still know when a local yoof is approaching on his poorly suppressed, 50cc of raw power bike if I'm using FM radio though).

The resistors are in the plug caps, not the coil, I don't think a coil would cause telly interference.

Yeah, I'd normally think plug caps. But I had nothing firing on any of the 5 cylinders. The interference thing may be completely coincidental, I wondered about some breakdown in insulation in the coil but who knows? (I also thought telly interference was a thing of the past but they'd got the car clocked so something was occurring).

My old Guzzi Le Mans 3 did this. It would start fine from cold, or from red hot, but if it was warm - forget it. My tame Guzzi guy reckoned it was carbs getting too hot, and fuel evaporating in the float chambers. But I was skeptical, as it started fine if red hot. I changed the inlet rubbers for thicker OEM jobbies, plugs and coils and it was much better. But no real idea what fixed it

May not be relevant, but - daughter had a similar problem with her 51 Polo GTi. Started fine when cold, but if she stopped eg for fuel, it wouldn't re start. Happened a few times when she was returning to Wales from us in Cornwall - refuelled 20 miles away, wouldn't start. By the time dad got to her it had cooled enough to start. Turned out to be a faulty temperature sensor. Told the ecu the engine was cold >> richer mix, so won't start. A known problem apparently. New sensor, problem solved.

A long way from your bike, but still...

Haven't fitted the new coils yet. Went out to Donnington today and OK again, I'll replace them at some point just lacking enthusiasm at the minute.
