Maybe a hangover from the old cross ply/radial days.
Different makes and model of tyres have different profiles. So while it’s not really an issue as they’ll work you could end up with a rounded profile on the back and a pointy one on the front, or one on the front that takes longer to warm than the bike and is worse in the wet etc etc. Each to their own though
In ye olden days, a popular mix was Dunlop 'trigonometric' (ie triangular section) TT100 front and Avon Roadrunner (rounded section) rear. Worked well on my 400Four and I only used that combo because I'd heard/read about it.
You can still buy mew TT100’s....unit over the road put a pair on a no expense 400/4 restoration. I had them on my 350ypvs and swapped them for KR124’s as I wanted grip 🤣

KR124's come in three compounds.

Last 5 laps, last 25 laps, last all season.

If you order them direct from Dunlop you get what ever compound they had in the machine at the time and they all cost the same.

When I was racing I was lucky to get the harder compounds for my RD.

I was racing on them 39 years ago. When the Michelin TG11 & TG22 came out in 1983, we all swapped to them

Can't honestly believe some of what I'm reading on this thread. Anything more than 10 years old - bin the fucker. Why would you want to ride around on a well dodgy example of a tyre that's nowhere near as good as current rubber?

Happy to run (for example) a Dunlop Sportsmart on the front and a Roadsmart on the rear, but not sure about mixing manufacturers F/R.

Been out on a new Metzeler Roadtec front with a well worn Conti Race Attack rear today, amazingly I didn't die, in fact it handled fine, but don't panic, a Roadtec rear is going on soon.

I use them on all mine. Don't expect a terribly long life out of them.
