Plimsoles were the ones with the white sole with the black band around the outer edge ( like a plimsole line on a ship ) ..

Obviously they are pumps, goes without saying!!

Imagine a classroom full of 6 year old kids having elocution lessons.
Now add that the school was a Catholic school and the teacher was a nun.
And she was trying to teach a bunch of working class kids in Burnley how to talk proper.

I stand testament to the fact that it didn't work.

My sister and I call them Daps - when out of earshot of our Mother!!

Plimsoll is the full name, but of course there were nicknames for them. According to wiki they wee indeed sand shoes originally!
