I can't advise further on starting fires but if you need someone to walk around in it once it's properly lit..

Re: Fire - easy way to start??
Well, it seems to be going well - and it is chucking out a good amount of heat! I nearly didn't do the fire tonight as not been a good week and definitely not a good end of the day, but I'm glad I did
Will be looking for a reasonable sized and priced wood delivery in a week or so (and someone to help me stack the wood!!)

Still going...
It's actually not that cold here, no snow yet just rain and more rain, but SCD is on and protocol says fire is lit:)

It's basically doing what it's designed to do, albeit with an accelerant. Plus they're made of flammable material.
Just an idea that occurred to me during a rained out camping trip in the country when it was proving hard to get the fire lit. Luckily my tentmate always came prepared for every eventuality and the bike was full of unleaded.

Re: Fire - easy way to start??
Be careful with the petrol idea - light it immediately after soaking it. Otherwise the petrol vaporises and a spark will surround you with a fireball.
A mate did this - used petrol to light a bonfire, which “he’d always done”. Poured it on, then his phone rang and it was a couple of minutes before he lit it. He survived but was very badly burned.
Actually I think it’s a silly idea anyway.

OTOH, it's probably best not to light them at all....
