For ref, we pay our (engineering) grads low/mid 30s.
If you scroll down there's a list of typical graduate salaries by degree subject area. Engineering £31k, Language, Media, Comms etc £24-25k. History £26k.

PS I should probably add that the missus was a freelance copywriter for the final 20 years of her working life (and did a few jobs on request after, in theory, retiring). Charged by the hour but was, usually, an expert in the field she worked in so they weren't just getting the writing done, they were getting content too.
