I worked in a support role within Land Rover product engineering when the philosophy was to keep everything simple enough to be repaired anywhere in the world by a reasonably competent mechanic with a few basic tools. Several decades later I was at last able to afford a new Discovery Sport diesel but it was a big mistake. The era of that simple philosophy has passed and won't ever return and when I swallowed my nostalgic pride I bought a Toyota hybrid which only needed the washer bottle topping up occasionally.

It sounds like you need a big estate car. Audi, BMW, Merc or Volvo. Skoda Superb maybe?

An estate wouldn’t be tall enough as we have greyhounds.

I've never had a Discovery but I have been cursed with both Petrol & Diesel Range Rovers in the past. If the V8 is actually more reliable in Discos than the diesel then I'd definitely go V8!

Plus, as you say, very little mileage planned so the mpg's not really a concern.

Buy one. If it works out reliable, great. If not, you've already mentally prepared yourself for a vehicle with 'character'

I had a discovery mk2 for about 5 years. Probably about 2008. The last of the 300tdi models. It was a brilliant car. Let me down once when the clutch went but apart from that it was great.

14mpg for the 4.6 and as reliable as Axl Rose arriving on time.

My buddy had a V8 Disco 3 but got rid for a V8 L322. He reckoned the Range Rovers are better cars.

Changed my mind on the discovery and bought this instead…

God no, can’t stand the man.

Then you wouldn't have seen 4 series of him driving around a farm, doing actual farmer stuff like towing livestock trailers or mending fences, in his weirdly appropriate yet inappropriate high spec Range Rover.

Had it for a couple of months now and it's been excellent. Really enjoying driving it and very happy all round.

The only fault I've had is that one of the upper intercooler hoses had developed a small split in it which got slightly bigger over the last month causing a ton of black smoke to come out of the exhaust under hard acceleration. I've replaced the two uppers and the two lowers and I have any missing boost back and I'm not a mobile smoke machine any more.

Saw an original early '70's Range Rover this past Sunday, I'd forgotten just how truly fucking hideous the early ones were... altho it appeared to have a LOT more ground clearance than the current versions, especially at the arse end.

Explorer ST will do that.. while cruising at 130mph & top out at 145mph.

But.. do they sell the 400hp ST version in the UK?

Probably should provide an update. Aside from the boost hoses, I've had to get a couple of things done...

I had an oil leak from the combined cam cover/inlet manifold. This was a big job that I gave to a specialist. It was potentially exacerbated by the increased boost from fixing the boost leak, but these things can leak. They found that two injector connections had been butchered and needed to be replaced along with the pipework. It turned out it was leaking diesel as well as oil, and probably the reason the engine bay was so spotless, as I assume that the seller had jetwashed it. They also replaced the thermostat housing as a precaution. This cost me just over 4k, but I was very pleased to have found a trustworthy specialist.

One of the egr to manifold pipes fractured and was replaced by the specialist. This cost about 800 but included fitting a new tyre and repairing a puncture in another.

I had a coolant leak from some aluminium pipes that form part of the heating system. The metal had either corroded or was a poorly manufactured part and sprung a small water leak. This took me about 10 hours of diagnosis, getting the part out, repairing it and getting it back in, but cost me nothing.

So, so far it's cost me about half as much again as the purchase price, and you definitely have to go into buying one of these with your eyes and wallet open... which I did.

I've done a few decent journeys in it and use it regularly, and I absolutely love it. There's probably a limit as to how much money I'd pour into it, but it's an incredible car. It's obviously not as much fun as some of the quick cars I'd had, but as an allrounder I've never had anything that comes close, and I absolutely love it.

I've just bought a set of 19 inch wheels with some AT tyres on them and replaced the two that were worn out, so there obviously will be no more snow this year or for the next 3. I'm planning on going to explore some green lanes at some point soon.
