I didnt think much of it at the time, but now when I go abroad I do find people seem to have a happier disposition?

I grew up beofre the internet and yes, we rode bikes, played in the fields and woods etc blah, but we'd have killed for playstations and the communications they have today. Sadly I also see the isolation it ironically causes and cyber bulling is a worrying thing. On reflection I'll take my childhood over one of todays.
You and me both brother  - And on-line gaming and social media (or the lack of control of it) , has a lot to answer for.
There's of course been angry shitheads since the dawn of time, and always will be, but it's mainly the self-entitlement / always got to be someone else's fault / let's get offended on behalf of someone else attitudes of a seemingly growing (in more ways than one too ) of the population that I really despise....

Thankfully not everyone is like that though, and I somehow managed to instill what we'd both probably call old-fashioned values (basically, treat others as you'd like to be treated, take pride in what you do and responsibility for your own actions, or in-actions), in my three offspring, and they've all turned out pretty well, although of course unfortunately none of us can ever guarantee that.

Anyway, that's my annual rant out of the way, I'll get back to the good stuff now! :D

That describes what we have here. Nobody angry either.

Wait a couple of years for the Great Reset and you'll be going back to those happy times: You'll own nothing and be happy
Dodgy69 wrote: Sat Apr 19, 2025 10:33 pmA while ago there was a documentary on TV about poor African kids, they had school but not much else, kicking a old football about, maybe 12 or them, all with smiles on their faces, enjoying themselves. The presenter was saying how we need to get these kids Internet access. I couldn't help but think that's the worst thing they could do. 🤷🏻‍♂️
How very patronising of you: "These kids are poor and happy, don't let them be rich and happy!"
If you think the internet is such a bad thing cancel your broadband, throw away your smart phone and report back. Oh, you won't be able to, will you? :P

Life is about happiness or being as happy as you can possibly be. I had a happy childhood, along with all my mates. We had no Internet at home, we did have a football, a bike and a fishing rod. These African kids were happy, no Internet at home either.

Fast forward to the children of the modern world. I need say no more. 👍

Neighbours along the road were all aggravated on the Whatsapp group about a new phone mast.

I didn't point out that most replies were probably posted using their phones.

90s were brilliant. Good music, good drugs, cheap cars that you could fix yourself, cheap two strokes, girls were prettier because they didn't have "influencers" making them want to look like botoxed ducks, less chance of getting your head kicked in by feral youths.

Head/foot interface was a reasonably foreseeable hazard in the 1970s.

In the 50s the teddy boys used bicycle chains and razor because crepe soled brothel creepers didn't do enough damage.

I suppose, and in fairness to the children of the modern world, the primary aged kids still play outside, making ramps for bike jumps, kickin a ball about, whatever, dawn til dusk and it's great to see. 🙂

Once they go to secondary school they dissappear, never to be seen again. 🤷‍♂️

My parents were great. The other kids were twats.

And the 80s were the peak years of football hooliganism - the 'firms' etc - when the weapon of choice was a Stanley knife with two blades taped together because the double wound was difficult to stitch up and left a 'better' scar.

Not changed much since Peaky Blinders.

We decided not to breed too, means more money for toys and allows us to get shit faced almost every night :)

FWIW the blades we'ren't taped together, they were separated by a matchstick so the cut was widened and a needed pulled stiching so the resulting scar showed forever. By comparison, a single blade cut is almost surgical and the scar non existent. Nice huh...

S'wot I meant. I thought the tape was to keep 'em snug otherwise the matchstick would fall out.

(If they put them in an actual Stanley knife it'd be a bit of a squeeze....but I have little practical experience in these matters, despite working close by the Millwall ground in the 80s :o ).

Everybody should do that. It'll solve all the world's current problems.

It might just create some new ones but we can deal with those when the time comes. Probably. ;)

I can't think of a single UK home I lived in that didn't suffer from being cold and/or perpetually damp unless I'd had a fire going for two days... & even then the bathrooms were still damp/musty

Objectively the past was shit you just forget the bad parts. I think I'm better off now than any time in the past. I might have to remind myself occasionally but fuck going back to coal fires, blackouts, crap medicine etc.
