It saves so much time and worry for the police and subsequently family members. I've spent hours trying to determine whether the person injured/ deceased is the owner of the vehicle (it's quite often not the owner) and who needs to be told. When you spend this time trying to do this, when someone is in critical condition, it can mean that the relatives don't get to see their loved ones until they've passed away.

I've also had to use family members to identify the person to make sure it's them. Which is fine when it is, but we've had it in the past that the family member placed under a huge amount of stress doing the ID when it turns out not to be them. Meanwhile, the real relatives are waiting for them to come home. It's a horrible time.

There is always the potential for the phone to be broken into a million bits in any off I'll grant ya, but I'll take the risk as I reckon the odds are slim unless you're the type to mount your phone on the handle bars

What about them, why do they need to know my medical details, because they're unlikely to be able to do anything with the info. For me I'm a long way off my medical conditions being responsible for me being face down in the road, so the non medical cause shouldn't matter to a random street walker having to call it in.

Long story short, there is no 100% fool proof way of carrying the info that will work for everybody, you make your choices based on your own risk factors and lifestyle and hope they work if needed.

All interesting stuff. What about this scenario .....

You are a paramedic .......called out to a motorcycle accident. Lad is on his back knocked out. Possible/probable spinal injuries .

Do you flip him over to try and find a wallet or a phone in his pockets ?

Nah. I wouldn't. Neither will help him at that point. They can do that stuff at the hospital. Main thing is to get him strapped down and into the ambo without doing more damage. (Having done all the breathing? blood? etc).

(I'm not a paramedic though).

If legal I would think the reg plate would tell the police who the person is.

Ach well. Still better than nothing like what i tend to carry unless in Euroland. Saying that my phone is not locked so they can still phone my wife unless i landed on it with my head.

When on the bike, I'm a bit paranoid about me being on the road and the bike being down a mountain (or the other way around!), so my phone is always in a jacket pocket and all the card info as above is in a small bum bag that stays with me.

Then other stuff I'd use at a coffee stop (kindle, tissues, sunglasses, stuff!) are in the tiny tankbag on the bike. I never leave the phone or wallet on the bike cos there's a good chance on the roads I use here that I won't be anywhere near the bike

If you've got an semi recent android or iphone then you can store the wife's number as your emergency contact and various other medical details that can be viewed without needing to unlock the phone... if you don't lock your phone then you've probably never seen the button that displays it

No, you get him started on a medical pathway, then worry about who he is, by which time all of his clothing will have been cut off giving free clear access to his identification method of choice.

Blood group wise, do Ambulance crews and the like pay any attention to stuff you're carrying? I assumed they'd just fire O-neg into you unless they have absolute concrete proof you're something else. An ID card or piece of paper wouldn't be enough?

I'm O-neg anyway

I seldom even have my wallet on me these days, it's all on my phone. I have the one button emergency contact thing set up.

Universal donor is kept in the blood store and replenished so there is always an availability-
If a person needs transfusion then they need to have a cross match first (from very distant memory its on the Trauma bloods order when they first arrive)
I would imagine in peacetime in the UK its very unlikely that anyone would be transfused solely on what their mobile phone says their blood group is.

Unless you're friends with Val Kilmer, except if he is your emergency contact.
