You can't go wrong with Labs or Retrievers they are the most friendliest and chilled out dogs.

My 5 year old Staffy has Butchers wet dog food from Asda, When I first got her I had her on some expensive dry stuff thinking it would be better for her but she quickly got bored and went off it and it was difficult to get her to eat it, Butchers has different flavours so I alternate those and she licks her bowl clean every day.

Best thing I did when I first got her is Crate/Cage train her. I leave the door of it open and she goes in there herself and lays down or takes a toy in there to play with and when I have to leave her alone I lock her in there knowing she is safe and content. She is never left alone for more than 3 hours. I have very good neighbours one side and we look after each others dogs and he or one of my other friends will pop in every 2-3 hours to let her out in the garden and spend bit of time with her. Everything I do is arranged around her and if I cant make suitable arrangements for her then I don't do it.

She had her initial vaccinations to get her over the critical puppy period when her immune system is low but she has had no further ones,
I did have her spayed as early as I could which was about £350 which I feel was money well spent.

I don't have pet insurance for her because it would have been a waste of money up until this point as she has not had any health problems, instead I have a separate bank account for her which has a monthly standing order set up to pay in to it.
I take her to the groomers every 2 months for a wash and get her nails done.

When I first got her I used to take her in to the back garden every hour and I never had any problems with her toileting inside.

Just seen this thread, a few notes

Crate. Yes, as others have said, worth doing. Puppies need loads of sleep, so encourage them to like the crate by throwing in magic treats when he's not looking.

Food. Ours arrived on 'raw' food. There's a thread on it. We eventually ended up, via wet food diarrhea disasters, at Tribal. Also James Wellbeloved, which previous dogs had.

Socialising. Do it, lots, everywhere you can.

Training. Our pup (10 months) is, when he wants to be, the best-trained dog we've ever had. Sit, bed, toilet, come, safe, close, left/right, stop, off, down, stay, wait, touch, boom(erang), leave, drop.

Bloody hell was that 5 years ago! I remember you getting her and sticking the picture up, but cant believe thats 5 years ago!

FWIW we've never had booster jabs after the first lot. Never insured a dog before we got a Frenchie either but thats because we've always had Jack Russells and they are like the Nissan Micra of the dog world, they just lkeep going and going...

I got my first cat (first pet) when I was 19, and never knew you were supposed to get them jabbed every year

He had repeated liver (or kidney, it's been a while) infections and died aged 10, and when I found out about the yearly jab I've felt guilty ever since (he was the best cat ever - he thought he was a dog ).

There is lots of controversy over booster jabs, Vets are adamant your dog/cat has to have them, insurance isn't valid if they don't have them
and there are lots of professional peoples that say they are not needed.

I had a staffy when I was younger I got him at 1yr old and he passed away when he was 16, he never had any vaccinations at all and only
went to the vet one time when a friend of mine looked after him and fed him something he shouldn't and he had bright orange poo.

So don't beat yourself up over kitty as the liver/kidney problems were nothing to do with not having booster jabs.

Ahh just found a pic of him, this was taken over 20 years ago, his name was Butch
I accidently left my back door open once when I went out and I when I got home and pulled up outside he was
laying in the front garden chewing the bark off part of a tree that was about 3in diameter and 4ft long,
no idea where he got that from, I just hope he didn't scratch any cars getting it home.

One consideration is that kennels will want to see up to date vaccinations.

You might not be intending to ever use them, but just in case?
