The modern trend that is LED headlights. They are far too bright, and there was no fucking need for them. Included in this, are wankers driving around with badly adjusted lights.

How LED headlights were allowed in the first place, is a mystery to me, but thankfully, there is now research going on concerning these bloody things, so something might be done in 20 years or so.

AIUI, it's how the regulations were written. Similar to how a 4W low energy household lamp puts out as much light as an old 40W lamp.

And, as an old git, I suffer from incoming bright lights.

But as one of those wankers with LED headlamps, I wouldn't want to go back to halogen (or tungsten, or acetylene ... ).

I've been whinging about this for years - probably cos of driving full time and up and down mountains!!

It's definitely more to do with badly adjusted lights.

Most people don't know that there's a button to change the "height/level" of their lights - actually for when the car is loaded, but I use/change it regularly. Put it low in town or when there's a lot of oncoming traffic, move it higher when on an empty road especially if it's a windy mountain road :D Simple but effectif :D

Most modern cars have self leveling headlights, so that button isn't there any more. It's usually a legal requirement to have them, depending on the exact kind of lights fitted it. That's why lots of cars do and up/down sweep on the headlights when you first turn them on.

Doesn't necessarily mean the self levelling system is working correctly though

Its checked on the MoT AFAIK.

I have only used it in modern minibuses, so it's probably there because of the possibility of 8 passengers and luggage.

But a fellow student said he had it in his car - proper petrol head, so would imagine its a modern sporty hatch!! LOL

Either way, if there's no button there must be one hell of a lot of self levelling headlights that just don't work!!! :angry-cussingblack: :angry-cussingblack:

Here you go...

Benefit of the doubt eh?

4.1.5. Levelling devices
Make sure any manual headlamp levelling devices (driver controls) work by:

switching on the dipped beam headlamps
operating the manual levelling device
checking that the headlamp beams move up and down
returning the levelling device control to its original position
Vehicles with high intensity discharge (HID) or LED dipped beam headlamps may be fitted with a suspension or headlamp self-levelling system. If these systems have been fitted, they must work.

Sometimes it is not easy to determine if the self-levelling systems work. In such cases you should give the benefit of the doubt.

Sooo, you should give the lights benefit of the doubt? Or you should let a garagiste check the benefit of the doubt!

No wonder so many people have shit levelled lights

Those are the official MoT rules.

So self levelling lights which probably self level pass an MoT test :D

Ditto on the Foglights BTW. I can't remember the last time I actually needed to turn mine on!

Modern car taillights are so bright that dedicated fog lamps are unnecessary.

IMHO :)

Compare against the old bolt-on Lucas fog hobbies when cars didn't have them.

But another PH: why only one reversing lamp on many cars? I quite often turn the fogs on for extra light.

OMG yes!!!! And on the mountain road up here, it makes overtaking a bit more complicated when they have dipped lights cos I can't see the road ahead to be certain that it's a good place to pass!! Ok, I can see there's nothing coming, but FFS - USE YOUR FULL BEAM!!  :angry-cussingblack: :angry-cussingblack:

I always think that surely, if they can see my head lights then there's a pretty good chance I can see their tail lights (I'd say better than pretty good chance TBF!). So why the F*ck do they put their fog lights on at the slightest hint of a mist! Not even actual fog FFS!! ANd then - not turn the bastard things off when they are out of the thin mist so you have to follow a sodding fog light for kms and kms :angry-argument: :angry-argument: :angry-argument:

I do totally agree on reversing lights too

But fog lights are the biggest PH!!

Yeah they're all the same lights on my car IIRC, they just shine brighter in "fog mode". Most combined brake/tail lights these days are LEDs which flash very rapidly, they're never actually "on fully" so to speak. The system just changes the number and duration of flashes.

On motorways they act as booster rockets and get the car up to 85mph much quicker.

WhyTF manufacturers can't have them automatically switch off when the car reaches 30mph ...

Or restrict the vehicle to 25mph if they are on.

Well, they can make the auto full beam refuse to work unless the car is going at 30mph, so as you say, should be simple!!
