Due to it being in warranty I'm looking for replacement part being fitted. I've gone directly to Nissan so it'll get genuine parts and mechanics.

Quite right its what the warranty is for. I had to fix mine for the MOT but the bugger came on again when he was testing that. Fail with a few other non costing fixes but...... It turns out my van being a 2007 should not have failed as the EML light is for diesels after June 2008. Not worth arguing as it never cost me and it failed on fog lights and main beam aim also but i will mention that when i put my other van in for its MOT.

Greeted by an Engine Management light when starting the car ! eeeek.

Spent the next 45 mins looking for my OBDII Diagnostic tool, which for the life of me i still can't find so had to borrow one from a mate.

Google tells me the EGR valve is stuck/seized/whatever. Not a massive issue, can be replaced...

Spoke to the dealer who i bought it from and sorted out the warranty side of things.. "anything on top that needs paying, just ring me and i'll sort it"... Can't say fairer than that... So it's booked in with Nissan on Tuesday morning to be diagnosed and hopefully sorted.

Bunch of arse...

It was kinda happy though.... as if it'd worked, we'd have got to 417 just as they were closing it due to high winds and snow LOL.
Did you go home?

It should drive fine?

Go home? I never left home.

I'm driving it there tomorrow for race day though. Then it's booked at Nissan on Tues morning

Bit of an update... I guess this thread is the best place even though not exactly 'right'

But anyway. We took the wifes Focus to the race and yesterday she took it to Nissan for me for diagnosis.

They diagnosed the EGR vavle and some actuator which is in the middle of the exahust.

Total cost inc fitting, £940. Ouch.

So Nissan called the warranty company and warratny co basically said "nah we don't cover that".

Long debates ensued between Nissan, warranty co and the dealer i bought car from.

Debates also happened between dealers local workshop and dealer to see if they can do it cheaper.

Final outcome is that Nissan are now ordering the parts and it's going into Nissan for the work. Paid for by supplying dealer. This hasn't by a long way been how i saw this going when i bought the Qashqai... i was hoping for a happy time, but that's clearly not happening. Sometimes though you find yourself dealt a hand and you've got to just play it really.

It’s a eight year old car weeksy. It’s going to go wrong from time to time.

I get that, it just irks a bit when it's 4 days after purchasing it :)

The part was £150 or so for one of them and about £400 for the EGR (you can buy a pattern one for £150 i think). As i'm not paying for it, i've pretty much just left the dealer/nissan/warranty co, to work out the details themselves and i've not touched the car for a week now. Well, apart from @Welsh Muffin taking it to Nissan yesterday. Luckily at the moment i/we don't really need the 2nd car as i only really use a car for MTB stuff currently, so it's no biggy. Whatever they did yesterday the light has gone out anyway, for at least the short term lol. But i get the impression it'll be in Nissan before the end of the week for repair.

edit:
So, the official Nissan part to fix this is part no 20010bb60b, which is the full exhaust section I presume, containing said flappy valve.

Through my research, I have noticed that Renault do a part that resolves this issue, but using just the valve section of the exhaust, on part number 147253272R. this involved cutting out the offending section and replacing with the new smaller part, and using exhaust sleeves to bridge the sections.

The difference between the two is £552 vs £140 respectively.

Few weeks back I bought the wife a 2016 44k mile Volvo V40 Cross Country D2 (Diesel).

Picked it up mid-week, I had to drop her off during my lunch hour and she went off to show her mum, etc...

She gets home about 5ish... "there's a light on the dash".

I goes out with the code reader and Torque app. It's the EGR.

"No worries, it's probably a bit sticky from being stood un-used on the forecourt", I turn the light off.

Two days later, I've been driving it for maybe 2 hours and the light comes on. So I turn it off with the reader. All the time the car is driving fine. Then it came on again the next day so I called the shop.

Fortunately for me the independent dealer I used had it's own MOT and workshop facilities. They had the car two days and fitted a shiny new EGR. No quibbles or complaints... except they gave the wife a 2010 99k miles Kia Soul diesel auto (she'd asked for an auto and it was the only one they had) as a loaner and she fucking hated it.

The mechanic I spoke to on collection said they'd done 4 EGRs that day.

Poxy EGRs and DPFs are a reason I stopped owning diesels a number of years back. Although I changed both of our cars recently and to diesels!

The wife's Car was better than free as it was won and came with a grand, so that's a few repairs already paid for. I couldn't actually find the Merc I wanted in a petrol! But after researching the diesel variant a bit, I found the EGR valve is readily accessible and an easy swap for a home mechanic.

DPFs can often be cleaned or sorted one way or another and both our cars got a tin of Hydra DPF cleaner put in the tanks for what good any additive will actually do. My wife only does short journeys which are far from ideal for a diesel, so I'll take that for a good run once a month and hope the regen kicks in when I do. My car doesn't get used often but when it does its mostly on a 40+ trip on a main A road, so hopefully gets cleared out enough. That said I still expect some sort of smog related repair from both cars. I guess the economy of a diesel goes in some way to contributing to its maintenance/repairs?

That's something I'm now sitting thinking "should I have gone petrol" but with this being replaced now I'm hoping the fix will outlast the lifespan of my ownership

I only bought the wife a diesel because she expects to do 20,000+ miles a year.

Any less than that and it would have been a small capacity petrol turbo, as seems to be the trend these days.

When the EGR sticks on the diesel Focus we have at work I treat it to a good thrash, this usually sorts it out for a few months, it spends most of it's time tootling round site at 20mph which causes it to get clogged up.

I was once told, under 20k a year get petrol. I've got an old diesel and it's fine but the last 10/15 years these filters do cause problems if not up and down motorways. Prob is, we look at tax cost and mpg and diesels win hands down.

I'm definitely going auto next year and petrol as my mileage ain't much. Currently focus in topping my list, but affordable petrol auto's of a half decent size ain't that common. That's also playing around the £8k mark.

As said, there is stuff you can mix with fuel to help this problem, chap I used to work with put it in his from new and his went fine on short trips.

A good chunk of mine will be long trips, so i'm less worried than most. The weekend I collected the car i did 2 runs, 200 miles each way :D

The one redeeming feature of a diesel is the bottom end grunt they have! I'd forgotten about that! The WIfe's Cooper SD is fooking hoot to drive and really powers out of corners! My 3.0 BMW had about 100BHP more, but you had to stretch its legs to get it howling, whereas the Mini is chomping at the bit from idle!

Both our diesels do more than double the BMWs mpg though and the Cooper SD is about 20mpg better than her old petrol Cooper, so as I said, the fuel savings do offset some of a diesel's probable repairs?

Well they would if you actually saved the difference in a spare account, for both tax and tank, but none of us put the £3 or £5 in a spare account in reality do we... .so you just potentially end up with a bill.

Power is completely and utterly irrelevant to me, i'm not a car person at all. The QQ has more than the Mondeo had, by a lot.... but i don't care in honesty. I don't do over 70mph and rarely break the speed limits by more than a couple of mph in the car anyway. I think the QQ may have the 130bhp engine, but i've not honestly checked on the spec/performance.

True. I quit smoking about 15 years ago and saved a fortune by not having to buy smokes every day, but I've never been better off for it! :D

Egr/dpf need an Italian tune up at least once a week!
Dpf need a good run out to get them hot and burn the crap out of them, 20 mins on the mway at 3/4 max revs will see you good!
Town work is death for modern smokers,
