In the east end lots of UBER etc - hybrid cars but still need fuel and it's surprising how far some people drive for work even in Greater London
Yes of course, bit these were not the people filling their cars, otherwise we'd have a crisis every week

The EU is grappling with a driver shortage of its own. The problem existed in both the U.K. and the EU even before the pandemic — in 2019 some 24 percent of trucker positions were unfilled in the U.K., while 22 percent were unfilled in Poland, according to the International Road Transport Organisation (IRU). In the Czech Republic, 21 percent were unfilled; in Spain, 20 percent.
A Europe wide problem exacerbated by Covid.

Indeed, all of Europe is gripped by panic buying fuel and half stocked supermarkets. You know the bit about relaxing visa restrictions, that'll be the restrictions introduced to stop Johnny Foreigner coming over and spreading Covid.

Covid also meant that DVSA stopped testing and trainers stopped courses. I don't know how many new drivers that meant didn't get into the system, but it won't have helped.

15k were trained, compared to 40k the previous year. It's estimated that 15-19k Eastern European drivers left the UK in the same year.

It's a cunning ploy by the government to get people used to topping up their cars as often as they can so they are used to it when all cars are electric.

I did mention to Mrs. D the other day that one thing I'm looking forward to with an EV - and which I'd not really considered before - is that it's always parked outside my house ready to go. No need to visit petrol stations! I dunno why, but the need to stop off at the start of a journey really irritates me. :D

I have to say the phrase “panic buying” is starting to grate. It’s a narrative designed to deflect the blame from supply chain management and government and point the finger at customers. Filling up with fuel is not panicking it’s simply an essential purchase for most

Well, if Grant Shapps says people are panic buying it must be the truth eh? Yup, this Grant Shapps-

In February 2015 he told LBC Radio presenter Shelagh Fogarty, "Let me get this absolutely clear ... I don't have a second job and have never had a second job while being an MP. End of story."

However, in March 2015, Shapps admitted to having had a second job whilst being an MP, and practising business under a pseudonym. In his admission, he stated that he had "over-firmly denied" having a second job. Under the name Michael Green, Shapps had offered customers a "get-rich-quick scheme" costing $497, and promised customers a "toolkit" that would earn them $20,000 in 20 days, provided they followed its instructions.
Doubt is not a pleasant condition.
But certainty is an absurd one

Supply chain management is always a balance, and when something upsets that balance shortages happen. People are buying fuel in amounts that they normally wouldn't buy.

Blimey. Just read about some of his 'achievements'!

Quite a character, to say the least.

You don't normally see forecourts sucked dry almost overnight by a 5 fold increase in demand though.

People see something that might happen and then take sudden irrational action through anxiety. That's pretty much the definition of panic no?
