He who leads the sung service. So for Evensong, he would be the cantor, "O Lord, open thou our lips" and the choir responds "And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. So my friend (who has a degree in music from Cambridge and is also a conductor as well as being a Priest) is well suited to the post and is able to sing the plainchant perfectly.DEADPOOL wrote: ↑Fri Apr 09, 2021 1:57 pmooh, a new word. "The succentor is the assistant to the precentor"
I am none the wiser...

Plainsong is curious, I'm not in the slightest bit religious but plainsong in a church* makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It's there with organ music, it just doesn't sound any where near as good on a recording or a radio.
* If you're wondering why I would be in a church listening to plainsong, last time it was a deconsecrated church being used as a gallery. The acoustics were the same and some random chap started singing as he liked the noise it made.

Wall to wall Prince Philip coverage across BBC TV & Radio channels plus ITV and LBC. Channel 4 are showing Flog It, Fix It. and are leaving coverage until the main news.
I can’t see why the BBC had to ditch 4 Extra to give a choice. Must be thinking of the licence renewal.

Medieval polyphony and organum are the same. Again recordings don't capture the sound of it being sung in a large echoey space.cheb wrote: ↑Fri Apr 09, 2021 3:00 pm Plainsong is curious, I'm not in the slightest bit religious but plainsong in a church* makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. One of my colleagues just called him The Duke of Dedinburgh, Which is incredibly poor taste, but still made me snigger.

S'funny. Last week everyone was lining up to slag off the royals and call 'em racist. Now they're falling over themselves to line up and day how they brought the world together...

Watched Chernobyl over the weekend on the basis of your post KFB....KungFooBob wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 2:37 pm Never really got Friday night Dinner, but he was great in Chernobyl.
Had me glued to the TV..... Miserable, sad, ruthless and upsetting - But a great production with some great performances.
