Fifa is understood to be locked in talks over the scheduling of the game at Azteca, Mexico City, which had been due to kick off at 01:00 BST on Monday (18:00 local time on Sunday).
Forecasts suggest there could be thunderstorms and heavy rain around that time, though Fifa is yet to provide any explanation for the change.
Under tournament safety rules, any lightning strikes detected within eight miles of the stadium result in an automatic 30-minute delay to play.
Fifa regulations for World Cup 2026 state it has the right to "cancel, reschedule or relocate" matches "at its sole discretion".
Football's world governing body maintains no decision has been made on rescheduling the fixture, and it remains in talks.
The Football Association (FA) had been planning as normal on Friday for Sunday's game, with officials involved in planning and security discussions.
Sources have told BBC Sport suggestions of a change, which was first reported by local media in Mexico, took the FA and its Mexican counterparts by surprise.
The match will be broadcast live on BBC TV, BBC iPlayer, BBC Radio 5 Live and the BBC Sport website and app.

I like the no nonsense refereeing but some decisions needed looked at more, or our home VAR needs a shake up but them filthy bastards, like its Spanish neighbours cant resist a good dive to claim professional fouls. England got robbed of a couple of big decisions also and Scotland were just shite. Poor team selection during the Moroccan game but that is managers fault not the ref. Thank fuck Clark has resigned.cvilla wrote: Fri Jul 03, 2026 8:53 am Just watched the Portugal v Croatia game, brilliant for highlights....but were Croatia robbed (by VAR), defender heads it backwards? or are the refs too scared...should have gone to extra time IMHO.
FIFA U turn.
BBC wrote:England's World Cup last-16 tie against Mexico will kick off as scheduled at 01:00 BST on Monday after a Fifa U-turn on a plan to bring the game forward.
Football's world governing body held talks with the English and Mexican football associations on Friday after proposing the match be moved to 19:00 BST on Sunday (12:00 local time).
Weather forecasts suggest there could be thunderstorms at that time, though Fifa did not provide any explanation for its suggested change.
Sources told BBC Sport that Fifa had been set to reschedule the fixture, and confirm in a statement, but news of the proposal angered both English and Mexican officials.
The Football Association (FA) requested time to review the weather forecast in more detail.
As talks went on, concerns over the impact on player preparation, fan travel and the logistics around moving the staging of such a huge game were discussed.
As a result, the game in Mexico City is now due to be played at its original kick-off time - 18:00 local time on Sunday.
Fifa regulations for World Cup 2026 state it has the right to "cancel, reschedule or relocate" matches "at its sole discretion".
The proposed change was first reported by local media in Mexico.
Fifa maintained no decision had been made and - after pushback from both associations - it was decided to keep the tie at its original kick-off time.
The match will be broadcast live on BBC TV, BBC iPlayer, BBC Radio 5 Live and the BBC Sport website and app.
Reports in Mexico claimed the BBC was part of lobbying around the kick-off time being earlier but a BBC spokesperson said the corporation was "not involved in these discussions".

Iโve been disappointed every 4 years since 1970.
I donโt expect anything else.
Bang on!
