My wife sort of complained that when we're out we never get a coffee in Costas or suchlike like all her mates do. This is mainly because I don't really drink coffee, but being a dutiful hubby I took her in one yesterday. She had a cappuccino but I didnt want one of those with chocolate on it so took the recommendation of a latte, which was basically an oversized mug of warm milk with an almost undetectable hint of coffee in there. They were medium sized drinks and both were best part of £4 each. Thank God she didnt want a slice, or should I say sliver, of cake at the same price! Turns out I should have opted for a flat white and I'll have that next time. Next time, yeah right...

Upset Mrs M. I forgot about a can of coke I put in the freezer the other day.......it has detonated and she is currently cleaning the debris out of the freezer and muttering.

I've had a fab day . Unexpectedly, completely unexpected !!

Got a text at about 7:30 this morning - "work planing has changed, can drive up, are you there?"

So, next hour was spent madly tidying this tiny apartment that, in all honesty looked somewhat studenty cos I haven't been arsed this week

The following hour I could chill a bit and relax, then the OH arrived !!

Seriously surprising cos - he has family I would have expected him to spend spare(ish) time with, its almost 2 hours to get here, he's now working tonight instead of all day today and tomorrow (he's doing family time tomorrow as one of his sons is 30 tomorrow )

But; arrive he did ! About as impressed with my temporary apartment as I am, but at least the weather was kind. He was kinda horrified that there is NOTHING open at the weekend up here, so we went down to Bourg for lunch, came back, chilled out on the 'snow' front in the sun for a bit (no snow now!!) and then he left to get a snooze before starting work.

He showed me a couple of sites online to look for rental places (in case the council thing doesn't work out) and called a mate of his that has knows people in the valley so might know someone looking to rent year round.

Awesome to spend a few hours together, no colleagues or clients around, or needing to get to sleep so one or both could get up early for work in the morning - fantastic! Could actually have some conversation time for a change instead of just taking the piss out of each other (although we did some of that too )

Still grinning like a loon

Took the MT09 out for a couple of hours, went over to The Sportsbike Shop in Reading to look for new gloves. Fuck all there. Came home and washed the grime and flies off the bike after riding it in the pissing rain Friday.

Cooked a proper Bolognese this morning - sofrito, panchetta, pork and beef mince, mushrooms, basil, parsley, oregano and tomatoes. Having that later tonight.

Surveyed for dog shites then mowed what's left of the grass and strimmed the edges.

Swept and hoovered the workshop and jiggled the bikes about so I could get to both workbenches.

Beer o'clock now.

I do like a nice Willow tree.

Watched a Lancaster, a Typhoon, and this lot zoom around the local skies throughout the day (plus a few other random aircraft)

Today is my birthday, wifey and I went for a tour of the castle in Petrer. It's a very small castle and nobody else was there, we were given the tour by a very nice young student nurse who's working there for the holidays. After the castle we were shown around the cave houses underneath which are now used as a small museum. There's a bigger museum in the town but we were too late, we'll do that another day. We found a small cafe for lunch then home. An excellent day.

Costa coffee reminds me of a quote by Eric Idle about American beer. He compared it to making love in a canoe.

Mrs. G, in a moment of being unsupervised by me, asked for a 'latte' at breakfast whilst in Italy last week.

She received a glass of milk.

Today I spent about 15 minutes trying to get the nail varnish off of my big toenails. I have no idea what the Gremlinette did whilst applying it, but fair play to her as it had a bloody high score on the Moh's scale.

Got into work and one of my chaps asked for a word in a meeting room, whereupon he burst into tears and told me he's been having counselling for a few months for anxiety and, more recently, panic attacks, the last one being in the middle of his town centre this weekend. Told me he didn't want to say anything lest people thought badly of him, or that he was letting people down. Obviously told him that was not the case, to take time to get better and to do whatever he felt was necessary.

Now, you're a chap that knows his Italian so you're perfectly positioned to win an argument for me.

How do the Italians pronounce 'latte'?

As you say above, an Italian barista (at a London railway station!) told me years ago that, as you say, most people ask for a 'lahr-té' which means milk. He pronounced it 'la-tuh' - which fits with what I know of Italian.

If I pronounce it thus to a UK coffee-slinger they look confused.

I've always pronounced it 'lah-teh', with no Italian laughing in my face or shaking their head in bewilderment.

Except maybe in Sicily, where I may as well have been speaking Arapaho, such is their accent and dialect.

Looks like I may have been given duff gen or a regional pronunciation. It seems that lah -té or lah-teh is but laar-té is

(Not that I ever drink it any more. Do like a morning cappuccino though).

Or all Italians just know that foreigners pronounce it wrong but understand what you want anyway

Coffee from the UK chains is invariably too watery or milky. A shot of espresso in a small cup with a frothed milk making up the rest of the drink is a true cappuccino. All this 'bucket of piss-weak coffee and a morning's-worth of lactation from a cow' is an abomination.
