Re: utterly random picture thread.
Lawn Dart moment.
Lightning were awesome, there is a tale of a military exercise were we had a reconnisance Canberra taking pictures of the "battlefield" and the Yanks crowed and produced a picture taken from a U2 which was way above the Canberra taking pictures of the Canberra and the battlefield. The RAF were so incensed by this that the next day with the U2 high overhead they scrambled two Lightnings. Both went ballistic and arched above the U2 (which was at 80K feet approx) as they plunged down alongside the U2, the Lightning pilots were making machine gun noises over his radio frequency (I think the truth is a bit more sedate.)
I've got a copy of Sled Driver and that has some interesting stories of the SR71. My favourite bits include talk of "unstarts" from the engines and the speed check request.

"Of all the stories you told me, which ones were true and which ones weren't?"
"My dear Doctor, they're all true."
"Even the lies?"
"Especially the lies."

Don Mcullimn -The Guv'nors THE GUVNORS – FINSBURY PARK, LONDON, ENGLAND – 1958 (LEAD IMAGE)
“This is the picture that got me started in photography. These were the boys I grew up with in North London, who were involved in a gang clash with another bunch of boys. I wasn’t really a photographer then to be honest, I was floating around and when this picture was published by The Observer in 1958, overnight I was offered every job in England in the media world – people thought I was an established person but I wasn’t. I was about 22 and I had no future. I’d worked in Mayfair in a small darkroom just copying line drawings, and I was doing odd jobs for The Observer – 15 quid for two days a week.”
