Re: Car thread - which one?
Follow the line from Mercedes through BMW.
I must have made a mistake when I decided a Ghibly has ridiculous running costs, I'll buy one of them next!

Re: Car thread - which one?
I was going to buy a diesel Ghibli, but the wanky Fiat parts bin media centre and switches put me off.... Along with the crazy depreciation.
I bought a Chinese Volvo instead. Because I'm rich and fun to be around.

This has to be like some kind of weird backwards anti-log scale or something, 'cause I'm struggling with the placement of Lexus and Volvo.

Re: Car thread - which one?
In America (fuck yeah) the modern volvos only come in T5, T6 and most are the 400bhp T8 (Hybrids). So they're classed as premium performance cars. People do trackdays in S90 T8s.

We have a B5 mild hybrid, for an SUV it can get a fair move on.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Sat May 18, 2024 8:15 pm In America (fuck yeah) the modern volvos only come in T5, T6 and most are the 400bhp T8 (Hybrids). So they're classed as premium performance cars. People do trackdays in S90 T8s.
My wife doesn't 'get' cars but she really likes her XC60.

The base model XC90 is £60k here in blighty. They're not a cheaper option to BMW or MB any more.

Re: Car thread - which one?
I looked at a Maserati Quattroporte, I think it was a 4 litre 400 bhp one, then I came to my senses and realised an old Italian performance car wasn't a sensible purchase (even by my very low definition of sensible)
I wanted to go round singing "My Maserati does 185" I suspect I'd have been also singing the following line "I lost my license, now I don't drive"

The petrol ones use Ferrari engines, so you get all the expenses of servicing a Ferrari with none of the kudos of owning a Ferrari.

Re: Car thread - which one?
I did a bunch of stuff on that car before I left my old job, including the carbon fan. We did all the structural etc work on it, the actual aero blade shape design was GMD's.Potter wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2024 9:06 am I’d really like a Gordon Murray car, even if just for the engine!
The looks are a bit elevator music for me, they don’t stand out or shout loudly like most supercars, you might walk past a plain blue or silver one in a car park and not notice it, until it started up and then you’d be overwhelmed with V12 loveliness.
The first variant was so loud with hoover type noise you couldn't hear the V12
Lovely bit of carbon, all one moulding and naffing strong with loads of funky internal structure, I was proud of that one. Cost a bomb though, no way I could nab one on exit.

Re: Car thread - which one?
They actually rallied them!
Also, which might relate to a photo in the random pix thread:
SM World, a marque specialist in Los Angeles, California, produced a turbocharged SM, which in 1987 set the land speed record for production vehicles in its class at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah – traveling 325 km/h (202 mph).
The DS/SM/CX range had lots of technology that found its way into other makers cars, mainly suspension related.
(I had one of the last CXs off the production line. It was entertaining but underpowered and, despite the size, passenger space wasn't great and the boot was tiny. Edit: the place I got it from was a CX specialist near Cambridge, apparently he exported a lot - to Japan! The other place they seemed to have quite a few, often the Safari/estate version, was Dublin. Got a taxi from the airport in one. The driver said they were popular because there were some big families in Oirland. The car trade here called them 'basking sharks', partly because of the shape, but mainly because they lazed around on the forecourt in the sun and nobody bought them ).

Re: Car thread - which one?
Until I came on here i never knew anyone with a good word to say about Volvos. Around here they have a terrible reputation. My neighbour had so much trouble with his v70 he sold it to buy a Range Rover Discovery, which must speak volumes. That said since my opinion has been change about them, I find I quite like the look of their SUVs now...Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Sat May 18, 2024 8:10 pm This has to be like some kind of weird backwards anti-log scale or something, 'cause I'm struggling with the placement of Lexus and Volvo.

Re: Car thread - which one?
I had a V70 2.5T (auto) and put 190k+ miles on it. It got a bit spendy towards the end so I asked my local service place to scrap it (they got the scrap value and tore up the latest repair bill). One of the staff must have had a use for it as it was still in use 3 years later.Taipan wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2024 2:37 pmUntil I came on here i never knew anyone with a good word to say about Volvos. They're useful things, nothing touched them for loading options. With the right configuration they could be reasonably plush. The 2.5T variant was a bit cheaper to run than a T5 but still had a bit of oomph about it. I noticed that Volvo service went downhill and costs went up when Ford got involved, at which point I used an independent outfit.

One of our neighbours used to be an AA man and he always said the 2 makes of cars he'd never own were Volvos and Renaults, but thanked them for keeping him gainfully employed!Count Steer wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2024 7:25 amI had a V70 2.5T (auto) and put 190k+ miles on it.
