When I read the new rules it looked like very little had changed, certainly no changes in law. Drivers were advised to give way to pedestrians waiting to cross rather than pedestrians having the right of way as he's saying.
I thought all this had stopped after every tabloid printed a different version of their interpretation.

I had someone give way to me following this new rule yesterday!
I wasn't even expecting them to, I stopped to wait before crossing the road. Brave new world.

Had it happen at a small roundabout, a couple of weeks ago.
But if I'd tried using my 'rights' several other times at the same location, I would have visited the nearby hospital by ambulance rather than walking to it.

Is this pedestrian – stepping in front of cars purely to highlight the new Highway Code – committing an offence? Or is it perfectly OK under the new rules?
There's no 'jaywalking' offence in the UK and technically it's always been the case that pedestrians have the right of way over vehicles.
The change in the HC just made it easier to prosecute.
Either way, it’s a surefire Darwin Award
Fortunately, relatively few pedestrians seem inclined to try their luck in front of cars... can't say the same for cyclists though - I've encountered a few gleefully holding up cars on narrower roads.

We had some dozy bint post on our local FB community hub thing, spouting that she walked out in front of car turning in to our road and was amazed at the drivers frustration with her quoting her right of way and telling them to read the highway code.

I did notice that he wasn't prepared to attempt crossing in front of the bin lorry.

"Being very flat and leaking bodily fluids onto a public road".
Is that an actual offence?
If he did to a police car he could be charged with "Impeding an officer attempting to carry out his duties".

All of the amendments are fine as long as everyone uses common sense. The issue is that we have people like knob boy is the clip and then some idiot cyclists I have sent out on the lanes around here

Pedestrians in the road have right of way, as far as I understand that doesn't apply to pedestrians on the pavement, even those waiting at a zebra crossing.

I think the old boy in the first frame got it right: "I think you need to get a life, son".

With the proviso that there's no such thing as 'right of way', check the new rules. You SHOULD give way to pedestrians waiting at a zebra, but also to pedestrians waiting to cross when you're turning into a side road.

The BBC are complaining drivers haven't read the highway code changes when it's pretty clear the reporter writing this hasn't read them either.
BBC News - Highway Code: 61% of drivers have not read new guidance, AA survey suggests

i doubt it's 61%... i'd put it closer to 90%.

This to me has to be the most ridiculous change ever, I wonder how many folk have been blootered because of it.

Yep. I've noticed an increase of people now simply walking out in to side roads assuming that the cars turning will stop, only a matter of time.....

Drivers turning-in have always had to give way to pedestrians crossing the side road. The only difference now is that they should do it for peds
waiting to cross.

Yes, but that's a pretty big difference, isn't it?
