Anyone who protested at the Queen’s funeral should have been kicked hard in the balls.
Otherwise, I’m all for freedom!

Personally I felt it was distasteful but as soon as you say you are free 'but' then things can get very murky.

Freedom to do what?
Any society with more than one person in it needs 'rules' - either written or unwritten.
A key one is freedom to object to and try to change (but not ignore) the rules. Harder to do and with different results in different places. Most of us are fortunate. If we don't like the rules we can go somewhere else and probably live quite well. Not everyone can.

At the bottom of the pile of all the media bias and BS though are civilians, caught up in it all, living an absolute genuine nightmare.
No one gave a shit when it was brown Middle Eastern people, but the media has most of you whipped up about the whiteys suffering in Ukraine.
Both are/were real people.
Are you going to add the UAE to your watchlist for its ongoing role in killing thousands of civilians and displacing millions in Yemen? Or are you not allowed to discuss that?Potter wrote: ↑Wed Oct 12, 2022 12:03 pm Oh well, let's see, I can't be arsed arguing with people that can only see through western eyes, but if Russia spends two decades and trillions of dollars killing and displacing millions of people in this 'war' and creating another wave of global resentment and reprisals (they call it terrorism), then it might be somewhere near comparable and we can discuss.

Yeah but it’s not a big “but,” not being free to cause an attention-seeking disturbance at someone’s funeral.

Well that is also my position. Gather intel from a disparate number of sources, see which stories sort of line up. Form an opinion based on the overwhelming preponderance of evidence.irie wrote: ↑Thu Oct 13, 2022 9:23 am
No, he is not saying that.
What he is saying, as I would also, is that rather than having only one official source of information he accepts a plethora of information sources, warts and all, and trusts his abilities to sort the truth from the distortions and outright lies.
It is a bloody minefield though...

Yes. Personally thought the guy wanted a good slap but all they did was pull him to the ground. Was it really worth the effort to find them two and charge them, i doubt it

There is merit in what you say (John Adams was probably right about democracy) but perhaps you would feel a bit differently if you were gay, or a woman who got pregnant outside marriage.Potter wrote: ↑Thu Oct 13, 2022 7:08 am
Dunno, I find that most organised governments leave you alone if you are a normal honest person, without fanciful ideas of regime change or nefarious activity supported by foreign powers. I prefer a place that is very strict on crime and street violence/aggressiveness, and where the press is very carefully controlled so they can't print lies, go through your rubbish bins, hack your phones, stir up hatred, etc.
90% of the UK only know what they think they know because the outrageously corrupt UK press told them what to think.
But this is way off topic...

Attending a memorial event and shouting at the deceased’s son is not wonderful behaviour.Horse wrote: ↑Thu Oct 13, 2022 2:08 pmIt wasn't the funeral they were shouting about, though.Felix wrote: ↑Thu Oct 13, 2022 1:01 pmJust do it out of sight

Who gets to decide on that bit then?
I imagine life has always been pretty OK if you're a straight, white, reasonably well off man. Stray outside those lines though and it probably wasn't such fun for the last few centuries.
The way things are going, wimmin will be wanting the vote next!

Re: Will Russia invade the Ukraine?
Re the comments up there ^^^ about London and the mayor. I can think of lots of reasons why I wouldn't want to move back and quite a few why I would like to. Who the mayor is doesn't feature on either list - whether it's Sadiq Khan, the fat owl of the Remove, Ken Livingstone or even Horace Cutler nominally running the place. (In some ways, some of Livingstone's years as Leader of the GLC were probably the best time to be there).

Last few centuries? I'd say try back as far as Ancient Greece.

The greatest genius of our time, Alan Turing, was hounded to death for being gay.
That was 1954 Britain.

And now we hound people to death for being dodgy on reality TV shows.

Are we saying the UAE is similar to the UK in 1954?Screwdriver wrote: ↑Thu Oct 13, 2022 6:28 pm The greatest genius of our time, Alan Turing, was hounded to death for being gay.

Re: Will Russia invade the Ukraine?
I said precisely what I said in the context of one countries rules and regulations being "better" than some other. Nowhere is perfect, either it suits your personal preference or it doesn't.
I think it is important to recognise those issues you may disagree with, perhaps even confront them but they certainly should not be ignored, denied or simply brushed under the carpet so that we can claim to be "holier than thou".
