Idiots who fight on the street, for any stupid “cause” should be sanctioned by the law.
Were they fighting? That’s not what they went to court for?

If any of them come into the city I live in I will try to stop them trying to destroy any part of the past. The past is what it is, warts and all. What these people do not comprehend is that the existence of monuments such as statues is a constant reminder of wrong or right doing in the past. Destroying them removes the reminder. That’s one way of looking at it.

At the risk of invoking Godwin’s, taking that argument to its conclusion do you think we should have statues of Hitler?

I think iries point is more that, say, prince Andrew should have a statue put up as a constant reminder of wrong doing. And he (irie) would try to stop anyone taking it down.

How is that the conclusion? Should there be statues of the Emperor Nero? The murals of the Portadown Orangemen?
I bet the French and Spanish expats aren't so keen on Nelsons column.

You can't go anywhere in a European city without seeing something that will upset someone.
Quite.
I also suspect something that some of these statue topplers may have missed, ( or more likely simply chosen to ignore) is that despite his involvement in the slave trade, which of course completely unacceptable in today's times, it wasn't seen in the same way back then and Colston was, of his time, and in his own country, a doer of good to many and that, as far as I can gather is what the statue was acknowledging and commemorating.

If these topplers really do care about a better world and the abolition of human slavery, then rather just than going and committing acts of vandalism they should maybe do a bit more research into how the iPhones in their pockets and some of the clothes they are likely wearing are produced and put their efforts into trying to change that- I guess that's harder work, a lot riskier to their personal freedom and well-being and not half so much fun though eh....

It was a bit surreal when the featured woman started waving autobiographies of the uae ruler at the camera every chance she got.

I’m not sure you can closely correlate the sweatshops (however unsavoury they are) where people are paid a low wage with the slave trade as it was.

I wasn't, but I think you know that.

i was however suggesting that if they really did care about slavery ( sweatshops like this https://9to5mac.com/2021/05/10/seven-ap ... ced-labor/ as I guess you prefer to call it from your post ) then I would expect them to be doing something about it even if that something is just not buying certain products.

I was glad to hear a trial by jury came down in favour of taking a stand against glorifying slavery and racism. Regardless of what would happen in a totalitarian regime with a poor human rights and no free press.
The beauty of it is that it doesn’t really matter which side the jury came down on. They have the privilege of being able to decide for themselves, and long may it continue as the alternatives don’t really bear thinking about.

Was it the trial involving William Penn where the judge locked up the jury for returning the ‘wrong’ verdict? Iirc that trial pretty much shaped the jury independence that we see today.

Aye, those saddos toppling statues should be procecuted eh?

Fairly sure I could find pics more or less the same about Stalin, Lenin, Musselini, Mebbe Tito and I've not seen much pissing and moaning about that so whats different about this one?

All a bit of a pathetic distraction though and Boris whining about it is to get attention away from the current sleaze thats utterly endemic in his party right now the disaster that is Brexit.

Don't look over here, look over there.

Hell, I wouldn't credit Boris with the brains to organise a pissup in a brewery. However he does just about have enough to capitalise on something thats already going on and try to get the saddos to make enough a fuss about it to lessen the pressure on him slightly.
Looks like its working as well.
