Anyway, I haven't been reading the news much, what's the story on energy prices, do we see them going up or down over the next couple of years?

Oof! There's a question with a few variables involved. I'd just guess down (UK, electric and gas) but never back to where they were. The price ratchet has ratcheted. There seems to be too little attention paid to balancing generation capacity, so we have the crazy situation where more wind installation makes peak shaving using cold start, gas fired power more expensive. New nuclear looks like an expensive gamble given the choice of technology and constructors and the eye-watering output price agreed.

It all looks a bit of a strategic mess.

Just had our letter from Octopus - our energy pricing is staying exactly the same from this month. Happy as was expecting a bit of an increase....

Can't see energy prices coming down hugely any time soon...maybe a small decrease, but nowhere near 2020 in real terms for a long time yet.

Fuel prices here are now at pre Ukraine war prices. I read an article a couple of days ago (and now can't find it) which said both oil and gas prices are back to where they were at the start of last year.

Given the UK's lack of storage I would expect oil and gas to be purchased at the lower prices and be available in the supply chain fairly quickly. I doubt this will be reflected in the price to the consume.

I'm far from being an expert and could be talking complete bollocks.

It's the Rocket/Feather syndrome. Prices go up like the former and down like the latter.

There has been a small increase from today I think, big one in april when Ofgem make sure we're paying enough. then the pain next winter.

The folk with money will pay and those without will eventually get it paid for them.

When our home energy costs increased, so did petrol. Petrol has come down a fair bit now, but not gas/leccy.

I'm still wondering why a country with its own natural gas, huge renewables, and a fair bit of nuclear has the highest energy prices in Europe while France pays about half what we do for energy.

People are ignoring you when you keep posting the same comment because it was discussed at length previously and the answers are still the same.

I kind of missed this in amonst pages and pages of Ant and Gas notSafe posts.
Anyway, maybe I asked it because theres a distinct lack of links and convincing facts being posted up.

That's what I'm having put in, new boiler, Hive and smart meter that (IIRC) gives a reading every 30 seconds, so you can see it as you use it.
My wife's sister has one in and they say it's changed their behaviour because you can see your money disappearing.

I don’t get it tbh. If I’ve got to drop the heating so I’m cold we may as well not have it on. We’re not exactly heavy users elsewhere so not many cuts to be made.

I’ll be interested to see ours tbh. When we moved from the last cheap rate they asked for a meter reading before putting us on the newer more expensive rate. I added 3 months worth of use to it being as they couldn’t be bothered to come out I assume now we’ll be close to having used that up so must check.

Just checked my December bill, gas is £60 more than summer months and leccy up £20.
Not as much as I expected.

Pretty sure some of the new connected apps can tell you how much each journey cost you. My Dad was showing me the other day how his Jag tells him how much fuel it used to do a trip, it's only a hop skip and jump from there to a cost of course.

We had smart meters and display fitted a while back. At first I was testing stuff to see what uses what. Moderately interesting in the short term, but 3 months on and we're back to normal. Yes, we are more careful with the electric regarding lights left on, but that's about it, the gas heating has to go on when it's cold whatever it costs, and that's where most of our money goes.

I do watch our daily spend and it usually between 6 and 8 pounds. Highest being 11. When first fitted, no CH on it was £3 a day. Exciting times.

Last years combined bill for December was £181, this year £324, and that's with a massive leccy use reduction

Glad I'm not the only one who's graphed energy use compared to last year - December usage was 76% electric / 96% gas and combined cost was 202%.
