Imo, the problems all come down to sheer number of vehicles due to sheer number of people. I would imagine if every ice vehicle was replaced with an EV, big problems would still be there.

The Ice was a fantastic invention and shouldn't be tossed off the cliff for good. Racing for example should continue as its not the problem. Will we still allow rockets to take the rich for a joy ride into space.

Until our leaders enforce limits on our growth, ( too late anyway ) we are just painting over cracks. Drinking water shortages are already a thing. The waste we creat is off the scale. We haven't done a very good job of looking after ourselves and are starting to pay the price.

Just heard on the news that in 2021, 1 in 6 cars sold was an electric or hybrid and in December 2021 electric vehicles made up 26% of car sales! The Socirty of Motor Manufacturers provided the stats and also siad they are crying out for the charging infrastructure to be improved. Apparently, there is a shortage of semi-conducters which is hindering sales, so the figures would be much higher if those issues were addressed. Also noteworthy though is all vehicle sales are down overall.

Interestingly over here, there are a ton of Teslas on the road in the last few weeks. Some French but many Dutch (the Dutch are driving out here for holidays because they can't go to Austria at the moment)

So, I'm guessing that the French infrastructure is ok for long distance. Each time I do a transfer I see between 1 and 6 Teslas on the road - can't be the same ones!! LOL

I'm test driving an Hyundai Ioniq 5 on Saturday and I am seriously considering the switch to EV this year.

They all want to show off their expensive new toys, they might not be so keen to repeat it next year.

I love the look of those - they're also way bigger in the flesh than they look in pictures, they look like a hatchback but are more like a little SUV.

Not to everyone's taste I'll agree, but to me they look like a 1990's computer generated Integrale The top spec ones can charge other cars, like some kind of weird air-to-air refuelling parody. Maybe you could get a fleet of them and re-enact the Black Buck missions.

I test drove bothe Hyundai IONIQ 5 and the KIA EV6 yesterday. The IONIQ was the RWD in Ultimate Tim and the EV6 was a RWD GT Line S. I liked both cars and even though they are both built on exactly the same platform they are surprisingly different to drive. First impressions are that I much prefer the Hyundai, it feels mor premium, it is enormous inside and a real pleasure to drive. I also really like how different t it is to a traditional car in look and feel. The EV6 feels much more cramped inside and is much more like a “normal” car, it is a bit more engaging to drive but the IONIQ felt quicker somehow. This was my first time driving EV’s and what shocked was how quick and responsive they feel even comforted to my current car which is a 450hp 6 litre V8!! I am very tempted to order the IONIQ 5 AWD and sell they AMG while it is still worth 20 grand.

It's the lack of delay in response innit? Move your toe and the car takes off...no kick down, no waiting for turbos, no getting up into the power. Press the pedal and you're away! It's the best thing about driving EVs IMO.

Even at 70mph you can just put your foot down and take off with zero hesitation.

I've been saying this for ages, it's pissing in the wind, it makes sense to try and reduce pollution and waste if we can, but ultimately it's just kicking the can down the road, sooner or later this planet will run out of resources, if we don't poison it first.

I thought it was commonly held there will soon be too few people on the planet as birth rates are dropping. And there are sufficient resources, they just need to be used appropriately.

That’s it exactly, that immediate kick of power is great, the C63 is great for going from 70 to 130 but these EV’s get to 70 damn quick. The IONIQ in RWD trim gets to 62 in 7 odd seconds but the AWD id rated at 5.2 seconds and I watched a review where it actually did it in 4.8!

I so want to drive an electric! Just to see!!! LOL The company I am working for has 4 Teslas. But apparently I need to work for them for a while before I get to drive one of those!! LOL

And after watching the episode I can see why, they were god awful, if looks like commercial vehicles have some way to come, although the new tranny sounds promising.

UPS and Amazon have both ordered >10,000 electric vans each - although AFAIK neither have actually taken delivery of any yet. They're being supplied by Arrival and Rivian, but I can't remember which is supplying which. I know loads of guys at Arrival, they're sucking up talent left right and centre at their sites in Banbury and Bicester and many of my ex colleagues work there. It's a bit of a running joke that if you leave certain jobs in our sector you either go to Arrival or you come to us (not Rivian ).

Light commercial vehicles actually make more sense than public cars as far as EVs go. They have very clearly defined journeys with pretty rigidly set up and down periods, so in theory EVs should slot into them more easily. Maybe not for long haul stuff, but Amazon 'last mile' stuff in particular is characterised by many many brief stop/start journeys totalling only a few miles, followed by a few hours sitting around loading up. Ideal territoty for an electric van really.

I'd be interested to see if companies with a large fleet thats more or less stationary every night end up providing vehicle to grid charging which may stabilise some areas of the national grid?

It's been mentioned a good few times on the fully charged show and various other electric vehicle programmes but so far I've not heard of it happening yet.
