Big fines for people who call ambulances for trivial stuff. Not the well-intentioned call for something scary that turns out to be unimportant, but the total timewasters. The Ambulance crew will recognize them.

Big fines for those drivers who are so arrogant, or so unaware of their surroundings, that they hold up ambulances unecessarily. Seriously, I have seen cars in lane 3 of the M1 totally unaware of a big van with flashing blue lights camping onn their back bumper for a mile or more.

Not going to cure all the delays, but every little helps.

Mates son is a paramedic. They have a couple of people on their patch that regularly call them out for little more than attention, but one druggie lady will start self-harming if they don't show up. Where do you go with that one!?

Self harm? Her choice, she wants to do it, she is an adult so she can choose. If she is bleeding out she may reach Cat 1, but they rarely do that.

Similar for suicide threats,. standing on a m'way bridge and causing chaos with police and ambulance tied up for hours. Attend, ask them nicely to desist, wait 5 minutes and fuck off. Usually it is a cry for help, so offer help, but if it is refused........... Crack on mate.

" Did you know the owners are arriving on Monday for a few days"

1- No
2- I was specifically told there was no guests until July
3- The place is a building site.
4- I have bike to MOT tomorrow and Car on monday

Plus, MH services would need to be able to help those people.

I can see the problems (and the lack of furore) when ambulances are delayed by people like that. A local lad broke his neck playing rugby and waited 10+ hours, lying on a cold wet pitch, for an ambulance. When he got to hospital he had hypothermia to add to his problems.

And MH have probably tried already, some are beyond help.

Ambulance crews are a scarce resource, and have to be rationed. Tough love is unfortunately necessary.

Saw an interview with a US paramedic who moved to the UK - and couldn't believe some of the reasons why people here call an ambulance.

FWIW, in three years and several hundred calls, none have been to time wasters. Although, I don't get sent to every type of call (no RTCs, MH, assaults, suicide).

Yet everybody knows the story of the shepherd boy who cried "wolf" and the message we take from the story is that the shepherd boy got exactly what he deserved not that the villagers were a heartless bunch.

I got sent to someone that gave symptoms of a heart attack - got there and actually she was lonely; chain smoking and drinking, asking me to be quiet and not wake her husband (asleep upstairs), wouldn't quit smoking when I asked (not totally dangerous, but we were told to ask people not to smoke as we carried oxygen). Left the proper ambulance people to it. I understand the call but a 2am emergency call out it should not have been!!

Another that stuck with me was one of my first - 8 or 9pm, call out because a kid had an asthma attack. The parents told me he'd been struggling for hours (got the impression it was mid or late afternoon it started). He had inhalers but they weren't helping at this point. Thing is, by the time I responded, both parents were half pissed so couldn't drive. I was a smidge annoyed on behalf of the kid because, why didn't one of them stay sober and deal with it earlier by taking him to the hospital instead of inflicting the responder situation then ambulance situation and hospital and then having to find a way home.

Maybe even back then I was a miserable old woman, but both, especially the second, struck me as bad use of resources - 20+ years ago. Guess that was the thin end of the wedge on people not taking their own responsibility??

How about we start a little closer to home: Motorcyclists could stop throwing themselves into hedges.

Much like the suggestions about how to reduce the world population, it never includes one's peergroup nor clique.

I got told by a fellow inmate that doctors over here call bikers "donors" as well! Mind you, having come almost bumper to face/shoulder with too many that hang across the white line, I can see why

The reply was along the lines that "they're often too mangled"

That's something I've always wondered but never asked Depends on the accident I guess TBF in this region there are so many sports that cause stupid injuries that it can't just be bikers called that here

All the sympathy and hugs to you - it's horrific. I had it at 19, only on one thigh, but fck that hurt. Even a lightweight skirt fabric felt like I was being killed

I'd honestly never considered I'd get it, nor had I been offered a vaccine. Over here apparently it's free for the over 65s, youngsters like me have to stump c200€ for each of the two shots. Seems like a bargain.
