This isn't some ground breaking new discovery. These magazines are offshoots of the cosmetic industry. The industry has spent the last 100 years or more trying (and often succeeding) to convince half the population that they are ugly but their cosmetic product will make them beautiful. the magazines are just the messengers.

As long as men's mags teach men how to find certain parts of women, know what to do with them and give orgasms

Car went for a service today, they managed to ring Mrs M and say that the front tyres had excessive wear on the tread depth and outer edges (hoping she’d say yes to changing them, and yes they’ll need doing soon but not right now) BUT they’ve fucked up fitting the pollen filter and the fan is now making a horrible noise. More wasted time wasted getting them to sort that out.

The new year honours system. Every year I get wound up by the confetti of new years honours given out, especially Knighthoods or Dames, either to popular people who have lived their dream job for years or for 'friends' of the MP's.
The Sir/ Dame thing is now totally worthless imo. It really does BMP. I shouldn't really let it wind me up, but it bloody does!!!

Why ? I don't see what difference it makes to any of my world personally ? I certainly wouldn't be calling them 'sir' if i ever met them. However i don't see a world in where i would meet them anyway... but if Torville and Dean are 'Dame' and whatever, then how or why would i ever really give a monkeys ?Nordboy wrote: Tue Dec 30, 2025 7:06 am The new year honours system. It devalues the hell out of it for those that are truly deserving of the honours, the everyday folk that do good works. Not that it keeps me awake at night, I'm never making the list in a month of Sundays

It doesn't wind me up particularly but the constant stream of awards to people because they've made a good living with jobs on TV or been good at football, ice-skating, hop, skip and jump, tiddlywinks or whatever make it all a bit pointless.
Mostly these things aren't cash generating....unlike the jobs for the boys/girls in the House of Lords. That grates somewhat.

Gongs and awards should be for little people who have tried to make a difference , or people who truly have.Count Steer wrote: Tue Dec 30, 2025 8:21 am It doesn't wind me up particularly but the constant stream of awards to people because they've made a good living with jobs on TV or been good at football, ice-skating, hop, skip and jump, tiddlywinks or whatever make it all a bit pointless.

It seems that girl footballers will get gongs for anything, Idris has made himself rich as have many other luuvies. So why an earth they need a social Oscar is beyond me.
In the end it just belittles those who really dedicate their lives to causes

I suppose it's all a bit of national showbiz*, as you say, 'social Oscars' and the masses love to see names they recognise rather than Doreen and Derek who have delivered meals on wheels for 50 years.
* and politics is showbiz for ugly people.

Thats unfair. Idris has used his celebrity to start the Elba Hope Foundation and is greatly involved in the fight against knife crime. His knighthood is well deserved.Mr Moofo wrote: Tue Dec 30, 2025 9:49 amGongs and awards should be for little people who have tried to make a difference , or people who truly have.Count Steer wrote: Tue Dec 30, 2025 8:21 am It doesn't wind me up particularly but the constant stream of awards to people because they've made a good living with jobs on TV or been good at football, ice-skating, hop, skip and jump, tiddlywinks or whatever make it all a bit pointless.

That noble, sure. But he doesn’t run he foundation - he’s the figurehead and will turn up as and well. He may even claim expenses against that charity. And then write off other costs against tax. Obviously he doesn’t have to do it - but his business manager and accountant will be happy that he does.Taipan wrote: Tue Dec 30, 2025 11:40 amThats unfair. I've got the NYE Lurgy. I could feel something not quite right yesterday, but it's now kicked in with full on yukky shittness. Fortunately we don't have plans for tonight, but it'll still put a bit of a dampener on things.

I sympathise, we were both feeling a bit odd yesterday, (sinusy and achy), but feeling ok this morning.weeksy wrote: Wed Dec 31, 2025 7:28 am I've got the NYE Lurgy. Was supposed to meet crust for a lunch and beers, but had to bail. Partly as I didn’t want to infect him but partly as I’m just a bag of shite today

We're grinding out a 1-1 draw between the flu virus and the flu vaccine I think. 2 hours feeling OK, 2 hours feeling grim - repeat. Just when I think the vaccine has won, the virus launches one into the penalty area. (To strain a metaphor past breaking point
).
Pretty sure the family member that struggled along to a family gathering was the Flu Deliveroo.
