This was the point I was trying to make (obviously not very well). Someone, somewhere should be collating these failures and analysing them. As you say, it may be a one-off, it may not. Either way the root cause of the failure needs to be understood. Then you decide whether it needs further (production line) investigation or not.

Anyway, I'm with Weeksy on this one - @Trinity765 - am glad you're getting sorted :thumbup:
And without wishing to extend the pointless-ness of this, um, side discussion, I am sure someone ( or more accurately, some system) will be collating the information from warranty claims at the factory, and taking action if there is a financial argument by doing so , if not, well, WGAF eh :1

I'm thinking about chopping it in now when I get back. Before it devalues even further. I bought it as I thought it would be a good tourer but it isn't. The petrol range is pants (120) and it's a very hot bike to ride. I'm expecting the battery to fail as soon as it gets cold. I'd rather have a mid range fun bike and pop to Scotland or the lakes on it before winter arrives.

As a former spannawanka pdi monkey, I find it 'unfeasible' that a set of head bearings should fail at 4k.
Adjustment, definitely! But complete replacement!
I'm guessing these are thai triumphs. This might be their 'Mercedes's moment as I like to call them, when a manufacturer puts production costs above quality and it bites them hard on the arse!

Normal service has resumed. Bike back in the garage and it's a lovely thing to ride. I stopped at The Shepherd & Dog, Fulking on the way home to enjoy the moment.

Triumph have had a few issues with headstock bearings recently and are trying to work out why - maybe its the road conditions. They are checking them all when they come back into the shop.

I took out the service plan on my NC750 as I'll be doing lots of miles on it. The dealer told me that lots of people take it out, but only do a few thousand kms in 4 years, so they don't get more than an annual oil and filter change, so Honda are quids in. Its riders like me low mileage riders are subsidising 😉

I also live in a very dusty area, so give my forks a visual check and maybe a rinse off before going out on them.

As for what's defective and what's wear and tear, it's a difficult one. The local KTM dealer had issues with the tyres on the 125's delaminating. Abuse (as all 125's are abused) or defect?

Bearings are a factored part (bought in, Triumph don't make them).

Someone in the quality dept will raise an issue with the quantity of claims once it gets over a certain cost, there'll be an investigation meeting, production will say bearings were installed according to procedure and outline the extra time required to change/improve installation, procurement will point out the cost of a better bearing, an accountant will weigh up the cost penalties and if the numbers add up a better bearing / more grease / bigger hammer will be implemented.

Or more likely, the accountant will look at the mileages of the replacements, estimate the failure rate, work out the likely costs and say, meh, it's not cost effective to change anything. At the end of the day it's just numbers on a spreadsheet.

Triumph are owned by Bloor holdings, it will get the same level of consideration as whether to buy a better bathroom tap.

In the meantime marketing will put it down to a bad batch. :)

Don't bother. People just don't listen to the advice available. I've been banging on about IL4s for days now, but has anyone listened and bought one!? Sigh...

It'll be cheap shit bearings, probably a supplier edging the spec down in the parts.

Check out Harley's recent issues with bought-in brake line assemblies that brought their production line to a halt.
