Looks like a soft link with the holes in the top of the pins.
If it is a soft link then it shouldn’t be a case of the rivet link being harder than the sealey tool, I have one that’s been used on umpteen chains and it always works a treat. What it was useless for was removing the chain but as you have stated a grinder works perfectly well.

The tool is designed to work flawlessly with soft rivet links if used correctly, but chains like Tsubaki it won’t work.

I personally would never use a clip link on a big bike but it’s not my decision, I wouldn’t recommend it that’s for sure.

I've had spring clips on plenty of big bikes, it's all we had in the 80s, so long as you fit them correctly they're fine, the clip just holds the side plate on.

A pair of mole grips squished the end of the rivet link nicely, the side plate isn't coming off and the link isn't over tight.
