Chain Riveters

Having replaced the chain and sprockets on my FZ750 today I discovered 2 things, 1. An angle grinder with a cutting disc is the easy way to split a chain 2. My Sealy chain splitter and riveter is softer than the rivet link on an EK 530 chain, the bent and twisted collection of shut metal parts has gone in the bin where it can be recycled into another shit tool.

So please could I have a recommendation for a chain riveter capable of coping with a 530 rivet link.

For how often I'd need one, I'd make friends with someone who'd let me borrow theirs.

I used to fit the split link and ride to my friendly bike shop, who would lend me their tool to put the soft link in. It's shut now, but I'm pretty sure the place that does my MOT's would either lend me the tool in their yard, or charge me a nominal fee to do it.

I live round the corner from a bike shop (you bought a bike from them) I'm working from home on Thursday, my plan is to ride round there and ask them to have a look to see if I've riveted it enough, and then get them to quickly do it for me.

I have got a 530 split link in the garage, with a 100 link 530 chain that I've no idea why I bought it.

I've thought fuck it, and ordered an o ring split link, I'm happier with a split link than a rivet link.

I've only used it on a 525 chain but there's no reason it wouldn't cope with a 530

FWIW I've bought endless the last two or three times and dropped the swingarm out. Good opportunity to grease the bearings too.

A chain riveter is one tool I have never got around to buying,when required,a ball peen hammer and a weight behind the link always worked for me.

I feel like I've missed out and now I need one.

It's not much more of a faff just to whack the rivet over using two hammers.
If I was going to do a lot of chains I'd maybe buy a decent version of the tool.

I dunno why all bikes aren't shafties to be honest.

No idea where my one went to - not that I had any real use for it once I bought Rocksters, but occasionally people asked me if I had one, and I would have been very glad to lend it, if I had one!

It is easy to create a tight link if you're ham fisted, I much prefer split links.

Shaft drives are hopelessly inefficient (and complex/heavy) whereas a chain is (I am pretty sure) THE most efficient mechanism for transmitting power between shafts.

Oh I agree, getting the right tool so that you can have a brain-out and painless experience is certainly easiest.

And I see what you mean about shafts but they're noisy and dirty and they wear too quickly. 90%+ of us are having a laugh if "efficient mechanism for transmitting power" has any bearing on our road-riding. Imagine if exposed chain drive was on cars? Eeeeew!

Looks like a soft link with the holes in the top of the pins.
