Re: Dirty Reiver
Today was the workout I did last Tuesday again. Last week was a replacement for the ramp test as I’d already attempted the 8min test on Sunday and was happy enough to workout at the old level still.
It was 3 x 20min blocks of 30/30’s. So 30s flat out, 30s resting for twenty goes.
You’d think having a 4h50 trainer ride in your legs would make them harder but fatigue and fitness are close bed fellows so actually, they felt great!
I didn’t quite do the intervals to spec as I front loaded the work efforts, averaging maybe 450w for 20s then holding on until the end. Of course the average for the 30s was about right but a 30s steady effort at say 375 would have been subtly different. Again, the recoveries were lower than spec too- mainly to fit in with road conditions.
That would have been a benefit to doing them on the turbo- nice crisp power lines. But a benefit of doing them outdoors was something Weeksy raised when I popped round his- each effort had unique demands placed on it by the terrain. So one may have started at low cadence high torque and involved lots of gear shifts up a hill, whilst the next one down the other side may be rolling on the watts at 100rpm and 25mph.
That’s way more realistic! And of course I was on my gravel bike too.
All in all- it felt great, and another big chunk of time (30 minutes) spent way over threshold is in the bank.
Easy spin tomorrow

Re: Dirty Reiver
Well, skipped my easy spin yesterday and then tried to do some chunky threshold intervals today. 3x12 mins of under/overs. I put them off all day but went out at half six feeling hopeful. And had zero legs
Kept trying but nothing would happen so just need to move on and try again on Saturday.
It’s a shame as I felt so good on Tuesday, I was hoping I’d absorbed the Zwift century already.
That’s the problem with going off plan I suppose- by doing too much medium-hard I couldn’t go hard-hard when needed.
(So to speak )

Re: Dirty Reiver
I think for some reason Zwift does zap legs more than outdoor, I guess because you're on the power and not relaxing almost constantly. Although the training you do it shouldn't be quite as big a difference as you ride to power/intervals

Re: Dirty Reiver
Yeah some people still count trainer time as 1.5 x the same ride done outdoors but I think it depends how easy the roads make it or how disciplined you are at not coasting.
It’s my own fault for not adjusting this weeks schedule but seeing as I want to try another big one this Sunday- I’d just as well scrap the plan and make up my own I think

Re: Dirty Reiver
All loaded up for tomorrow! Hoping to knock out an outdoor century. I have way too many kcals on board but if I can train myself to handle it- I think it will help in a 9/10/11/12 or whatever hour effort Dirty Reiver may turn into.
Troughing sweets and drinks will give me something to do too
Rubbish session today- did one sweetspot interval (18 mins at 264w) and then couldn’t do any more.
I’m not going to let that get in my head for tomorrow- if I can just get far enough away from home then I’ll have no choice but to ride back again
I also fiddled with my position afterwards. Moved the saddle up, back and tilted it back to try and lift the pressure off my wrists. 6hrs+ tomorrow will see if it was a wise move

Re: Dirty Reiver
Legs were back for a bit. The last two hours I suffered with achy feet around the cleats. I’ve never really gelled with these Sidi shoes so I may try and change them before the event.
The new position was much better mind you.
Ended up doing a taking a couple of minutes over 6 hours as I threw in a climb up Whitchurch hill and a lap of Greenham Common. 16.5mph/192w/221np

Re: Dirty Reiver
Wow that’s pretty interesting! I set autolap to every 5 miles.
The last lap was similar HR and cadence to the first.
The difference was I was producing 100w less for the same effort!!
That shows why power is king for pacing. And that my stamina still has a way to go
Shoes that don’t hurt like hell after a few hours will help close that gap but otherwise- I still need to fiddle with my nutrition too I think.
I had sugar in all three bottles but I reckon plain water and more reliance on sweets for the fuel would have been better.

More pork pies from vicars, maybe even a scotch egg.
You're doing it all wrong. Enjoy it and feast!

Re: Dirty Reiver
Turned out this week was recovery week which was nice- so just a couple of endurance rides midweek. Then we had a work bbq to organise last night so I skipped yesterday’s session and did a shakedown ride on Salisbury Plain today for 83 miles in 6h30.
Shakedown was the operative word! Some of the gnarlier gravel was pushing the tyre limits really. Being so heavy at the minute, I didn’t dare drop the tyres below 35psi. Most of the time they were great but I really longed for more volume! Sections that I don’t even notice on the Scott Spark were a struggle to stay on the track at 25-30mph.
With the added fatigue the smaller tyres bring- it did make me wonder whether in fact the MTB might be the better choice for Dirty Reiver
But that’s unfair on the Diverge really as most of the rest of the time it was awesome. The future shock did help a lot- as did the confidence inspiring Geo and all the regular gravel was a breeze.
I wasn’t pleased with my own performance though- I had to get up at first light and do all my work before I could leave so I was up against the clock a bit and already quite tired.
I ended up doing 83 miles with about 60+ of them on gravel. Power was down to 175/210np as I was expecting it to be 8 hrs for a full century.
So actually it was less kcals than the road ride last Sunday.
Fuelling went better- obviously it’s harder to eat and drink to a routine off road as it may take a mile until the terrain allows. I had plain water too this time which made a massive difference. I forgot Peperamis so I had 4 rice crispie squares, a bag of haribo and a bag of winegums.
That was the best test yet for whats to come and I think hauling my fat ass around the long course at all is going to be a great achievement I think holding the power is going to be easy enough- especially with the event day buzz. But it’s just not going to buy me the kind of speed BBS says it will.
I *may* dig the MTB out and do a ride just to double check which is the right choice but the Diverge is better at load carrying- so I would have to switch to a camelbak if I went for the MTB option.
It was a cracking day out in its own right today mind you- the weather was a nice change and the Plain views were great in the sunshine.

Re: Dirty Reiver
I may have made a cycling Vlog
Hopefully I’ll film some of Dirty Reiver seeing as the luddites at British Cycling don’t have anything to do with it
Need to tweak my GoPro settings though as it looks cack on the speeded up sections.

Re: Dirty Reiver
That is insanely hard that thing
Would be fun a couple of stone lighter.
Garmin battery died as I was saving so I need to try and rescue the file.
But I must be around 10h dead for the timed section (minus neutral start).
My Garmin is showing 10hrs including the neutral bit but I think it was 3 minutes longer elapsed time. Sadly I missed my goal of riding the whole thing without unclipping. (Once to retrieve my bottle up a slow steep climb, when it popped out of my back pocket and once at some ruts around a puddle where I had a pee and swapped out my bottom bottle.)
Last time I looked, I was at 176w/219NP but I ramped up the pace in the last five miles so it may be a tad higher.
Bike was insanely good. Literally perfect for that event. Even the 38’s were spot on at 32/35psi. The confidence I had downhill was amazing- that Diverge geometry is very clever!
My body held up well apart from sore feet. I decided to ignore them for 50 miles instead
I took all my food and drink and skipped the aid stations. I had 1x750ml of red bull, 1x750ml plain water, 1x750ml of 100g sugar, 1x550ml of 100g sugar and 1x550ml of plain water.
In hindsight, I should have stopped at the last aid section for plain water but luckily someone gave me some.
With 5x rice crispie squares, 1 jelly babies, 1 haribo star mix and 1 bag of pork scratchings (they were the BEST choice ever!) my food weighed 1200g
All in I dread to think what the bike and food/drink/tools weighed- 18kg maybe.
Being fat and riding to power was hilarious. I was literally a rolling roadblock up the early hills but then would reel everyone back in at 240w on the flats and be doing +15mph down the hills. A few miles later, you’d end up alongside the same folk. That’s why I’m not group riding at the minute- it’s impossible to pace nicely alongside regular folk.
It is pretty “roadie”- I struggled to get too much banter going but given how hard we were riding, it’s hardly surprising.
One poor guy was slumped over his bars, saying he was cracked at mile 73!! But he made it to the finish so I made sure I congratulated him for his crazy effort!
At times, the headwind made going downhill on gravel a 240w, 10mph slog but overall it could have been worse.
Weather was great- too hot at times! With just enough early rain to dampen the dust.
I think I’ll go back in the spring- IF I’ve lost weight. And I’ll probably go lightweight on the bike and raid the aid stations just to mix things up- although they all looked congested.
That’s certainly my hardest day on the bike- I just hope I retrieve the file.

Re: Dirty Reiver
I was hoping to Vlog it but GoPro one touch record stopped working without me realising, so the only event footage I have is the neutral start
I’m quite happy in my own company The problem is work as usual. I’ve just got in now from feeding so my Reiver adventure was really a 48h mission that started at 05:30 on Friday.
I worked until 9am, drove up for 7 hours, signed on, rode my bike, ate burgers, slept in the car, woke at 05:30, ate burgers, ride my bike for 10 hours then immediately drove home for 6 hrs, slept on the sofa so I didn’t wake Sally, woke at 05:30 and went to work and just got back for breakfast.
Finding mates of similar fitness willing to do that is a tough ask
Rich was going to come but we wouldn’t have been riding together- he’s 20kg lighter.

Re: Dirty Reiver
09:55 official time.
Fastest was 06:43
That’s 18mph which doesn’t surprise me- it is a fast course.
His power was 246w/275np which isn’t other worldly apart from relative to his weight.
Also, it becomes a completely different event as duration increases. A 7hr effort and a 10h effort are worlds apart.
It’s why the old adage about ‘it never gets easier, you just go faster’ isn’t true when applied to a fixed distance course
