iPhone screen

Post by Noggin »

Anyone changed one? I don't 'need' to do it right now - and still might get someone else to.

But, any horror stories? Advice? Can it be done. (I'm not totally useless at fixing things, and being good at crafts, little stuff is a bit easier for me!!)

Don't forget the home button is paired / coded to the motherboard, so even if your new screen comes with a new home button use the old one

Easy but also stupidly cheap at virtually any pop up phone shop. Shops around here will replace a screen for less than the cost of the parts.

When I had it repaired last out here it was 109€. Too expensive for me to do a second time :( :(

Have you looked up the price of a replacement screen?
I think support is ending for them this year, you might well be able to buy a second hand one for less than the repair price.

Probably true. I bought a s/h iPhone 6 as a 'Spotify phone' when I got a new(ish) car a couple of years ago and I think it was £70. (The car ICE/aerial was designed to physically connect to Apple but only Bluetooth to Android).

Come to think of it, the iPhone is doing nothing now, if you want to downgrade to a 6 you can have it! I bet others will have better ones stuck in a drawer somewhere though.

Thank you, that's a really kind offer. But postage is gonna be high to here I think :( It's definitely a back up phone, cos I'm a klutz so need a working back up!! I'm not fussy about phones! LOL

I've found screen kits on Amazon.fr that aren't too scary. It's just the technical side of actually doing the replacement. And not being sure that it will actually work after (I killed my last 6plus and someone in resort replaced the screen, but the phone still didn't work - it's currently in a box under the bed!!)

I'd be willing to give it a go I think!! Maybe!! LOL

The PO here are a bit twitchy about carrying stuff with (high energy density) batteries, particularly if things are going to go by air, but if you PM me some idea of location (Alps I assume!) I can check on that and postage.

It's in a reasonably good state - they fit a new battery before each sale.

There was a Radio 4 programme recently about repairing stuff and the presenter repaired his iPhone (battery and/or screen, not sure) as part of it and it seemed as long as you have the wherewithal to get it open, the rest is reasonably straightforward.

Ok - holy thread revival batman!!

I'm about to have a go at this, mainly because the screen on my proper phone is pretty fubar, so I need to replace that - but I want to practice on a different on

Any new/last minute advice for a first screen change??!!!

(The proper phone also has a pretty smashed back, so I have a replacement of those arriving soon too :silent: )

Thank you. I was just about to go look for a video. It's not my favourite way to learn but I think I need to this time!!

I also found an old iphone 6 that is busted - it's basically the same size as the 8 that really needs doing (proper phone!) so I might take that apart first and have a look :1 !! Then I can change the screen on the 7plus to do a proper practice (although looking at it, I think it's the protector that is broken, but i do need to practice, so . . . . )

Crossing fingers I can do it, but might do it tomorrow when it's daylight

Extra question - anyone know how to get a screen protector off? I've got a cracked one on a phone that looks as if the screen is fine - but no idea how to get a glass 'style' protector off :(

You should be able to prise it off with a finger nail!

If not you need something thin, that is made of a softer material than the screen (so it doesn't scratch it), so probably plastic.

You might even be able to slice it off with a bit of your sewing cotton.

Well damn! Got all brave and now at a stop

Firstly - separated the phone, woohoo!! Little bit concerned that the bottom right 'plate' is discoloured, looks heat related but hey - it's a spare phone, so going to try not to worry!! LOL

Image

I know this phone has had a replacement screen before (only once before and by a shop!) but having started taking it apart, I find that there are screws missing, a cover plate missing and one screw over the home button doesn't fit any of the little screw drivers that came with the kit, so I'm now stuck

Image

But, have ordered spare screws and a home button online to be delivered tomorrow (still cheaper than paying someone to do it - and lose screws!!). I'm not home tonight as start cat sitting today, so I can leave everything on a tray on the seat and come back to it on Thursday when I have the 'bits'.

Having looked at this one, I'm feeling a lot happier about taking the daily phone apart to replace, will probably do it once I've finished the spare, but much less afeared!!

But I will find a video of the iphone 8 being dissected just incase there are differences

Woohoooooo :bblonde: :bblonde: :bblonde:

I have a working spare phone!! Ok, the home button doesn't work but I knew that would happen after I broke the bit that connects the original!!

But, I'm very very happy!!! :bblonde: :bblonde: :bblonde:

Now to sort out the 'main' phone - I messed that up too, so waiting for a part to arrive tomorrow. Still cheaper than paying a shop to do it!!

Just got to sort out all the logins cos everything was on the main phone with touch access!!

But, worth it :bblonde: :bblonde: :bblonde:
