£5 would probably just fill the tank on a Honda Melody. At least 100 miles

BTW, these days if 5 quid is enough to get you fuel to last until payday you probably live close enough to walk 1.40 last time I filled up.

Re: This here fuel station deposit thingy
I've only experienced an issue with Revolut over in Italy as it's technically a pre-pay card. The funds took a couple of days to come back, meaning I had to fund it from my current accounts, but it wasn't a huge issue, just an annoyance.
My biggest ballache with the whole 'pay at pump' thing is the lack of them. I'd use them all the time rather than traipse to the shop, queue behind people getting a week's shopping or a latte and then get back to find I'm stopping somebody else getting fuel. It's almost as if they want you to come into the overpriced shop to buy shite on impulse that you neither want nor need...

Re: This here fuel station deposit thingy
I encountered my first 'pre-pay' station the other day (very busy station approaching the peage north of Bordeaux). It was late, pumpy no worky. I had to wander over the, considerable, forecourt to the kiosk and pay for 50€ worth up front before the lackadaisical petrol chimp would turn it on.

If someone puts eg £30 in the car knowing they only have £5 in their wallet, that's a very different prospect to the 'shop' saying "how much money in your wallet ? £5 no mate that's not enough, you're not allowed any "!

Had that quite a bit in Belgium a couple of years back. Don't think I've ever had it in Fronch.DefTrap wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 9:39 am I encountered my first 'pre-pay' station the other day (very busy station approaching the peage north of Bordeaux). So just as well that isn't routine for fuel purchases.Jody wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 11:53 amIf someone puts eg £30 in the car knowing they only have £5 in their wallet, that's a very different prospect to the 'shop' saying "how much money in your wallet ? £5 no mate that's not enough, you're not allowed any "!

Re: This here fuel station deposit thingy
Here they 'block' 150€, you take fuel, usually less than 150€, and depending on your account it can take 3 or more days to be unblocked. It may be old news, but 3 days of not having access to that 110€ is a big issue to some. Many of the fuel stations here are only open to pay by cash (or card but at a cashier desk) when the supermarket is open. One doesn't have a cashier desk but has a little machine that you can put in your note and get a 'voucher' to be able to buy fuelHorse wrote: ↑Tue Aug 03, 2021 9:02 pmItsDemannu wrote: ↑Tue Aug 03, 2021 8:48 pm So you in the UK are embracing the prepayment at supermarket fuel stations.
Apparently they take £99 against your card until you draw the fuel, then refund the balance 'almost' immediately.
No idea how immediate the refund is, but this side of the channel, they like to take €150 and usually takes 3 days to get your money back, which is a pisser if im on the bike doing some miles on a Sunday.
It's a brave new world
a. Old news
b. Almost momentary
AIUI the system puts through - at least, initiates - a transaction (when you pay at pump, so put your card in, then fill up, then pay) to validate your card. But it's not completed, it does not show on your statement. So mot refund.
Certainly recently, a lot of people around here don't have 150€ in the bank all month and certainly can't afford to have the balance not used by fuel blocked for a few days!!
Great if there's an open kiosk when you need to get fuel - as in, without having to make a special journey to get it, at a cost in fuel!! Less of an issue in the uk for sure. But standard out here

Re: This here fuel station deposit thingy
OK, I see the problem. But also the solution? Add the €5 of fuel when shopping.

Re: This here fuel station deposit thingy
Totally! Would definitely be the sensible option! LOL I had a call from a friend a year or so ago who hadn't and was stuck trying to find somewhere to buy fuel on her card but not at the pump. Luckily she had 10€ in her purse and I told her about the place that takes notes and gives a voucher - cos it was sunday and no where was open!! (And whilst I would have driven down to get her, I really didn't want to!! LOL)

Re: This here fuel station deposit thingy
I'm missing something?
My biggest regular transactions by card are food, not fuel, especially currently where movement is limited. (say regularly north of 100€ pw on food and less than 50€ on fuel). So why are fuel services blocking chunks of your credit allowance and not supermarkets?

They can't take the fuel back.

Re: This here fuel station deposit thingy
I remember when I studied mercantile law that things like petrol are different in law.
If you steal a loaf of bread, they can point to the bread which you stole.
Once you've filled up, they can't show which petrol you stole.

So why block it for 3 days?
I'll probably not have eaten all my grub but they probably won't want it back.
I may have 'stolen' flour and sugar and significantly increased it's value by making a lovely cake. Screw you thought-police!

Go steal a load of food and take it back when they refund you the fuel money.

That's a small tank if it's filled up for £1.40. A fiver will give you three and a bit more goes.Mr. Dazzle wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 8:20 am BTW, these days if 5 quid is enough to get you fuel to last until payday you probably live close enough to walk 1.40 last time I filled up.

Re: This here fuel station deposit thingy
Rural Italy is a bit a retarded in terms of customer service (or, the alternative view, they have it bang on in terms of family-friendly working hours) and evenings and Sundays, forget the actual shop being open. No card? Not a problem. You can stick in a 5, 10, 20 or 50 Eur note in a central machine and tell it the pump you're at, if you have the notes on you, but if you're stuck with a Eur50 note and you only need Eur20 worth of fuel, forget getting any change. That's a bit piss-boiling, particularly when the hire company wants a full tank on return. You either get striped up by the garage or the hire company. Hobson's choice, mio caro.

In Oregon it's still illegal to "pump your own gas" - as they phrase it - in most places. They must think our pay at pump machines are something from the future.
