Test rides
My mate has just moved his 1000sx on as it wasn't for him.
Fancies a tracer, and LBS has a full ohlins 16 reg that he fancies. Thing is, they've told him no test ride. Apparently he has to buy the bike, and if he doesn't like it, they'll give him a credit note!
WTAF!!!!
Is this the norm now or are they just being twats?
My money is on the latter!
Talking of money on....

Re: Test rides
I've not never* ever had a test ride on any bike I've bought, mostly because I'm lazy and like shooting from the hip.
*Except one CCM, which I stalled 10 yards out of the gate and couldn't get restarted, so it dosen't count and I still bought one

Re: Test rides
Kawa dealer had a demo ZH2 they were more than happy for me to take out.
"Of all the stories you told me, which ones were true and which ones weren't?"
"My dear Doctor, they're all true."
"Even the lies?"
"Especially the lies."

Re: Test rides
I've told him, buy somewhere else, then pop around on it and casually mention that you only bought it because they let you test ride it!

Every bike i have bought in the last 30 years has been after a test ride, both shop and private sales

Re: Test rides
Same as all the above.
Blade in Swindon wanted £20 to cover fuel and insurance, I thought that was slightly harsh but understand the logic and happily have paid it.

Re: Test rides
I once crashed 996 I had no intention of buying on a "test" ride. It cost me a grand.

Re: Test rides
I can understand a dealer being cautious, but paying in full and then getting a credit note! Fuck that for a bowl of cherries.

But it over the web by credit card, you've 28 days to change your mind and legally get your money back (I think)

Re: Test rides
It may be an insurance thing. I know if I test rode one at BMW in Sunderland the excess was 1k. If I ‘borrowed’ one while mine was in for a service it was £50. If I wanted a test ride I did it while mine was being serviced.

Re: Test rides
I had a test on a Tracer 9GT. The choice was pay £25 for cover or pay the first £1k of any damages.
When I tested my GS they didn’t mention any charge etc but on filling in the test ride form it said I was liable for the first £2.5k of damage . It wasn’t something that was discussed at any point and there didn’t seem like an alternative which was a bit of a surprise.
